RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, on August 14, 1945, the people of the United States of America received word of the end of
World War II; and
WHEREAS, on that day, people in the City of McHenry, in the United States and around the world greeted
the news of the Allies' noble victory with joyous celebration, humility, and spiritual reflection; and
WHEREAS, the victory marked the culmination of an unprecedented national effort, and the historic
accomplishment of concluding the world war was achieved through the collective service and personal sacrifice of
many national heroes as well as many McHenry citizens, both in uniform and those who supported them on the home
front; and
WHEREAS, more than 400,000 Americans gave their lives in service to their country during World War II,
and, August 14, 1945, marked not only the end of the war, but also the beginning of an unprecedented era of rebuilding
in which our country led the effort to restore the shattered nations of the Allies and their enemies alike, and to create
institutions to work towards a more powerful and peaceful global community; and
WHEREAS, the dedication, courage, self-sacrifice and compassion of the World War II generation have
inspired subsequent generations in the United States Armed Forces, including the men and women currently serving our
country in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world; and
WHEREAS, the entire World War H generation, military and civilian alike, has provided a model of unity and
community that serves as a source of inspiration for current and future generations of Americans to come together to
work for the continued betterment of the United States and the world, and
WHEREAS, the "Spirit of 45 Day" has been designated by the United States House of Representatives in
order to commemorate the anniversary of the end of World War H on August 14, 1945; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor and City Council of the City of McHenry wish to go on record in support of the
commemoration of an event which transformed and molded the McHenry community for all generations, both present
and future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and McHenry City Council go on record
recognizing the efforts made by those from our community who participated in the historic accomplishments which
brought to a positive resolution the end of World War H, both those in uniform and those who supported them on the
home front and declare, Saturday, August 14, 2010, the 65"' anniversary of the celebration of the end of World War 11,
as Spirit of 45 DV in the City of McHenry, and call upon the people of our community to join their neighbors in
recognizing and celebrating this special observance.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be incorporated into the minutes of this meeting and a
copy be presented to the local Sprit of 45 Committee for display in a prominent place.
