Monday, February 14, 1977
7:05 P.M.
Mayor Stanek called the hearing to order. City officials present
were Aldermen Bolger, Pepping, Harker, Datz, Wegener, Smith, Hromec, Schaedel ,
City Clerk Barbara Gilpin and Supt. Fred Meyer. Approximately 55 people were
in attendance.
Marge J. Jones , executive director of the McHenry County Senior
Citizens Council , and a large group of senior citizens, were present and pre-
sented a petition signed by 100 senior citizens stating "We, the undersigned,
being Senior Citizens of McHenry County, do hereby petition for a fair share
of the Revenue Sharing Funds about to be divided for a Nutrition and Senior
Citizens Center in McHenry, I1 ." The group presented a tentative budget for
a proposed Walk-in Center in McHenry and requested that its members be given
$10,000 annually toward that project. Sylvia Grayson of 2903 S. River Road
and Zita Yates of 3401 West Third Avenue, McHenry, also spoke in support of
that project.
Beverly Verstege of 3916 W. West Avenue, McHenry, asked that revenue
sharing money be used to resurface the tennis courts at Freund Field and the
area be renovated along with reditching near the courts to prevent runoff water
from a factory in the area.
William Bolger, President of the Library Board, requested about
$15,000 to be used toward operation of the Public Library.
Gary Baseley of 1613 N. Riverside, McHenry, officer of the McHenry
Rescue Squad, requested money for operation of the rescue squad, at least
to the rescue squad
$9,500 to match the amount granted from Revenue Sharing from McHenry Township.
Larry Ekeroth of 1413 N. Freund, McHenry, suggested that revenue
sharing money be used to preserve and clean up a natural resource by dredging
Boone Creek from Maple Avenue bridge to the Fox river. Michael Wieser of
1402 W. Millstream Dr. , McHenry, spoke in support of Ekeroth 's suggestion.
Kathleen Anger of 3219 W. Fairway Drive, McHenry, suggested that
revenue sharing money be used to hire a park director to supervise summer
activities for the children in city parks. Alderman LaVerne Hromec added her
support to the suggestion.
Alderman Walther Schaedel mentioned the possibility of con-
structing a field house which could be used for all age groups. Alderman
Jack Pepping said a community center is definitely needed to serve everyone
in the city. Stanek added his support for a multi purpose building and
felt Petersen Park was the location because sufficient parking facilities

were available there. Pepping asked that a portion of revenue sharing funds
be committed toward a field house. Hromec suggested starting out with some
kind of building that could be expandable.
Conversations continued between the audience and city officials.
The meeting adjourned at 8:10 P.M. Entire meeting was taped and is on file.
