RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, children in our community and all across the state and nation are beginning
a new school year; and

WHEREAS, students will be walking or biking to school in neighborhoods on sidewalks
and streets, approaching or waiting at school bus stops, and boarding or alighting from buses;
and
WHEREAS, the City of McHenry Police Department in conjunction with McHenry
Elementary School District 15 provides personnel to guide students as they cross busy
intersections near schools, and safeguarding students as they arrive in school bused_ and private
vehicles; and
WHEREAS, motorists can help protect children by being especially careful near schools
and in residential areas, watching their speed, observing traffic control devices and obeying
school crossing guards; and
WHEREAS, it is important to increase all motorists' awareness of the need to be alert
for children at school crossings, to review and follow the rules of the road as they apply to school
zones and school buses, and to be respectful of crossing guards and school personnel assisting
the safe crossing of students to and from school facilities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the McHenry City Council goes on
record as recognizing August 26* through September I" as School's Open Safety Week 2002 in
the City of McHenry.
