RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE EXTENSION OF ROUTE 53 FROM LAKE -COOK ROAD
TO STATE ROUTE 120, EASTWARD TO INTERSTATE 94, AND WESTWARD TO NEAR
THE INTERSECTION OF US 12 AND ILLINOIS ROUTE 120
Whereas, the City of McHenry has long supported regional highway planning; and
Whereas, the City of McHenry has supported and participated with regional transportation
providers and planners to take a comprehensive look at transportation as part of the Lake County
Transportation Improvement Project (LCTIP); and
Whereas, tens of thousands of vehicle trips are made each day between McHenry County and
Lake County; and
Whereas, the current situation with 1153 ending at Lake -Cook Road is causing motorists to divert
onto other roadways including County highways; and
Whereas, the resulting congestion is also causing traffic to spill over onto local roadways in most
villages and towns in Lake and eastern McHenry County; and
Whereas, this congestion contributes to high accident rates, most notable at the intersections of
Rand and Dundee Road and Rand and Lake -Cook Road, which were recently listed as the two most
dangerous intersections in Illinois; and
Whereas, the LCTIP has undertaken a comprehensive study and identified the extension of 1153
as a finalist option based upon its ability to improve travel for motorists; and
Whereas, the extension of Il 53 will reduce congestion on existing roadways; and
Whereas, the LCTIP's analysis has shown that the alternatives to IL 53 have comparable impacts
to the environment and higher costs; and
Whereas, public and agency input will be an essential part of the decision making process.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of McHenry supports the extension of
IL 53 from its present terminus to 11 120, eastward to 1-94 and westward to near the intersection of US 12
and IL 120, as recommended in the CATS regional transportation plans.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the text of this resolution be spread upon the official record
of this body, and that a suitable copy be provided to the Lake County Division of Transportation, the
Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois Toll Highway Authority, and the Lake County
Transportation Improvement Project
