R-00 -_Dafi
WHEREAS, the City of McHenry is humbled and honored by the many and profound sacrifices made
by all those Americans who contributed in any way to the monumental war effort that we and history call World
War 1I; and
WHEREAS, citizens from our own community contributed to this victory, either in uniform or on the
home front, and by so doing, were part of the Allied defeat of the Axis Powers after five years of terrible
conflict and horrific experiences of war in Africa, Europe and the Pacific; and
WHEREAS, this was an enormous, unprecedented and truly heroic effort which changed the face of the
world, made it safe for democracy, and will forever be remembered not only by successive generations of
Americans, but by others worldwide, as one of the greatest examples of collective self-sacrifice we have ever
known in the face of pervasive evil; and
WHEREAS, the ultimate sacrifice of losing one's life in defense of his or her country and their
country's principles was suffered by over 400,000 brave and selfless American soldiers, sailors, marines, and
merchant marines; and
WHEREAS, this massive war is the only conflict or war in America's history which is not recognized
with a national memorial; and
WHEREAS, families of these brave men and women to this day still have no official and prominent
location to which they may go to collectively recall the war days, while honoring their dead and celebrating the
lives of their family members whom they love and remember; and
WHEREAS, member funeral homes of the National Funeral Directors Association, the world's oldest
and largest funeral service organization, have had the distinct privilege and honor of mounting a nationwide
campaign, including a strong component locally, intended to help raise awareness of and funds for the National
World War 11 Memorial in Washington D.C.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED our own area funeral directors have had very special
relationships with the families of veterans — families who buried relatives, the families of those who returned
home, and the survivors whom our funeral homes still serve to this day and the City of McHenry hereby gives
recognition and thanks to area funeral homes that are involved in this great effort.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of McHenry recognizes and gives both commendation
and appreciation to our local participating funeral homes, their staffs, and staff families, and to those local
citizens who have shown financial or other support for the funeral profession's efforts to help construct the
National World War II Memorial.
PASSED and APPROVED this I' day of November, 2000.
a Mayor
