HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinances - MC-67-28 - 01/09/1967 - AUTO KEY REMOVAL FROM UNATTENDED VEHICLEMC-28 Inc - & �- 0?F AN ORDINANCE PRESCRIBING STEPS TO BE TAKEN BY MOTORISTS UPON LEAVING AN AUTOMOBILE UNATTENDED, INCLUDING REMOVAL OF THE IGNITION KEY FROM THE VEHICLE; AUTHORIZING THE POLICE TO REMOVE KEYS FROM UNATTENDED VEHICLES; AND IMPOSING A PENALTY. WHEREAS, automobile thefts have shown an alarming in- crease over the past ten years, and WHEREAS, a large percentage of automobile thefts are of automobiles left unattended with the key in the ignition or the ignition unlocked, and WHEREAS, this negligence on the part of the motorists provides the opportunity to juvenile and teenage offenders as well as to professional automobile thieves to commit this crime, and WHEREAS, it has been demonstrated that the enactment and enforcement of Lock Your Car Ordinances drastically, reduce automobile thefts; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of McHenry, Illinois, that Article IV of Chapter 13 of the Municipal. Code of the City of McHenry be and hereby is amended by adding to said Article IV the following: 49.2. LEAVING UNATTENDED VEHICLES. No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit it to stand unattended in any public place without first stopping the engine, locking the ignition, removing the ignition key from the vehicle, and, when standing upon any grade, turning the front .-heels to the curb or side of the roadway. 49.2. (a). ACTION BY POLICE OFFICER. Whenever any police officer shall find a motor vehicle standing unattended with the ignition key in the vehicle, in violation of this section, such police officer is authorized to remove such key from such vehicle ,and to deliver such key to the police officer in charge LOOZF KINNE of the City police station, City Hall, 1111 N. The registered owner of a vehicle found in violation of this section shall be held prima facie responsible for any such violation. 49.2. (c). PENALTY. The penalty for violation of this section shall be a fine of One ($1.00) Dollar, .which shall be paid at the police station .ghen the owner or operator shall reclaim the key. This ordinance shall be in full force and effect ten (10) days after its approval, passage and publication as by law provided. Passed and approved this 9th day of January, 1967.
