HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 10/6/1986 - Public Property Committee PUBLIC PROPERTY COMMITTEE MEETING MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1986 7:30 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Committee Chairman Bill Bolger at 7:35 P.M. In attendance were Committee Members Ray Smith, Ceil Serritella, Gary Lieder and Bill Bolger. Others in attendance were Mayor Busse, City Clerk Gilpin, Lt. Donahue, Supt. of Public Works Batt, Park Director Merkel and Building and Zoning Officer Zabor. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss providing additional space for conducting City business as we are cramped for space at the present City Hall . We also considered the bids received by "Space Planned Interiors" for revamping the areas now used by the City Clerk 's employees, Public Works, Building and Zoning and Park Department. Two bids were received which were very close in total amounts. It was the unanimous decision of the Committee to have Barb Gilpin discuss the bid proposals with Marie Thompson of Space Planned Interiors to determine delivery dates and other important information that would help determine which bid would be most beneficial to the City of McHenry. We will then present this to the full Council on October 15, 1986. The Committee also agreed to accept the low bid of McHenry Paint, Glass & Wallpaper to replace the drapes in the Council Chambers and to provide window coverings in some of the upstairs offices. The question of providing more space for the workers in the present municipal building, either by expanding or finding new quarters, met with a variety of opinions. Chairman Bolger stated that two years ago he and Barb Gilpin toured the City looking for available buildings. The office space in the Illinois Bell Telephone Company building is vacant but company officials refuse to rent it out. Bolger went to say that we have looked at other buildings, namely the Old Flour Mill , the Cornucopia Building, the Savings Bank and others as well as trying to work out an agreement with the Fire Protection District for a Public Safety Building which would house our Police Department. For one reason or another none of these were acceptable. John Zabor, at the Chairman 's request, drew up a very preliminary plan, providing for an addition across the entire west end of the present City Hall . This could be done at a fraction of the cost of the other considerations and would keep all departments under one roof. However, when this was thrown out for discussion there were as many differing opinions as there were people in attendance ranging from converting the municipal garage to municipal offices to starting from scratch and building a new municipal building in the park land in Whisperinq Oaks. For the present it appears that all this abstract perception has interfered with reality and so for the time being the issue is on hold. However, I still feel strongly that the present location of the City Hall is a good one and for a comparatively small cost we could put on an addition which would suffice for 10 years or more.
