Chambers 2: 3 p.m• --,' ' • In attendance: Liz Nolan, Donna Tobeck Alice Howenstine and Mike Teta First item on agenda: Water Analysis ( 1971+ - 1982) as presented in writing by Fred Batt at the request of Mike Teta. Found to be incomplete for our purposes since it was a Raw Water analysis and not an analysis of what goes into homes after trea.tment by the city. The committee does not consider the water situation a problem as such. However, the topic is one that the committee stated in its original meeting it would wish to address and keep on top of(water quality) . Therefore, it is the committee' s request and recommendation that Fred get an update on the water analysis by working with the EPA and be able to inform us as to the quality of the final product as it enters our homes. What does the EPA pay. for and what cost would the city incur in obtaining this information? Also, we might want to check with the County Health Department to see how extensive testing they do. Might we possibly have a cooperative arrangement with them? Second itm on agenda: Leaf Collection Plan : It is the recommendation of this committee that the City launch a pilot program for leaf collection. The recommendation is that we start with Whispering Oaks - Set aside one day next week - proYably .onday. and have the Public tilorks Department pick up bagged leaves in the Oaks area -- then take them to a compasting site near the barn in Knox Park where they would be piled for com- posting. We feel this can be a successful operation and , can get off the ground immediately if there is a special news release in the paper. Andsince the initia. step would affect only the Oaks areahandbills on colored paper coul.d be distributed door to door to give special notice to each individual residence. There are numerous advant- ages to the city. As you can see from the correspondence from Fred Batt one of the advantages to the city would be ' .G : - to keep leaves from clogging storm drains. we might ca11 thi project 'Rake It In" as suggested by committee member Donna Tobeck. : Third item on agenda: The question was raised as to what is done with ' the chemicals used in various industries after they have served their purpose? Do they go down the drain, so to speak? Into the ground? How is the disposal of them handled? It was suggested that we ask the ounty Health Department. A discussion ensued regarding air pollution in the McHenry Shores area. There appears to be a very unpleas-- ant odor emanating from a farm south of the Shores. .} W aS deciv, to first check witht the farmer and then consult the Yiealth Department ,( Discussed poor water conditions in the Shores and lack of cooperation on part of water company owner. Restated the reason for the committee' s existence: to- promote the enhancement of our environment and to act as a watchdog on anything that affects our community en- vironmentally including building development. Final item on agenda: Alice Howenstine gave a brief report regarding pro- gress on the county landfill. Adj ourned 1:1 5 p.m. Submitted by Liz Nolan
