HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 10/12/1986 - Environmental Advisory Commission . y Environmental Enhancement Com-mitte Meeting
' ` Oct. 12 , 1986 in Council Chamers 2: 3 p••
In attendance: Liz Nolan, Donna Tobec, Aice Howestine
and Mike Teta
First item on agenda:
tilater Analysis ( 197 - 19g2) as presented in writing
by FrEd Batt at the request of Mike Teta.
I'ound to be incomplete for our purposes since it
was a Raw Water analysis and not an analysis of what goes
into homes after trea.tment by the city. The committee
does not consider the water situation a problem as such.
However, the topic is one that the committee stated in
its original meeting it would wish to address and keep
on top of(water quality) . Therefore, it is the committee' s
request and recommendation that Fred get an update on
the water analysis by working with the EPA and be able to
inform us as to the quality of the final product as it
enters our homes. What does the EPA pay for and what cost
would 'che city incur in obtaining this information? Also,
we mibht want to check with the County Health Department
to see how extensive testing they do. Might we possibly
have a cooperative arrangement with them?
Second itm on agenda:
Leaf Collection Plan :
It is the recommendation of this committee that the
City launch a pilot program for leaf collection. The
recommendation is that we start with Whispering Oaks -
Set aside one day next week - proYably :ondayo and have
the Public ti+lorks Department pic up bagged leaves in the
Oaks area -- then take them to a composting site near
the barn in Knox Park where they would be piled for com-
posting. We feel this can be a successful operation and
can get off the ground immediately if there is a special
news release in the paper. Andsince the initial step
would affect only the Oaks area handbills on colored paper
could be distributed door to door to give special notice
to each individual residence. There are numerous advant-
ages to the city. As you can see frorn the correspondence
from Fred Batt one of the advantages to the city would be
• : ^ to klep leaves from clogging storm drains. e might ca11
this project "Rake It In" as suggested by committee Ynember
Donn. Tobeck.
Thirc item on agenda:
The question was raised as to what is done with
the chemicals used in various industries after they
have served their purpose? Do they go down the drain, so
to sxeak? Into the ground? How is the disposal of them
hand] ed? It was suggested that we ask the lounty Health
Depax•tment.
A discussion ensued regarding air pollution in the
McHenry Shores area. There appears to be a very unpleas--
ant odor emanating from a farm south of the Shores. -' W dS
deci to first check witht the farmer and then consult
the Health Department ,
Discussed poor water conditions in the Shores and
lack of cooperation on part of water company owner.
ftestated the reason for the committee' s existence:
to- promote the enhancement of our environment and to act
as a watchdog on anything that affects our community en-
vironmentally including building development.
Final item on agenda:
A1ice Howenstine gave a brie.f report regarding pro-
gress on the county landfill
