HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING
Friday, June 16, 2000
Special Meeting
Meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM The following members were present Jason
Glaw, Linda Wolff, Gail Wolfineyer, Jose Lagunas, Val Hobson, Pat Buhrman, Gwen
Doolan, and Werner Ellmann. Excused Absences Julie Babenko, and Kari Horsch.
The meeting was called to discuss racist materials being sold at the "Cloud Nine" Gift
Shop on Riverside Dr. Buhrman reported going in to the shop and seeing racist
materials being sold. They included patches with the saying "White Power", "If You
Don't Speak Engish, Get the Hell Out of Here. They had a large display of Nazi Flags
and Swastikas. Buhrman spoke to the owner and let him know how disgusting and
offensive these things are. Ellmann went into the shop later in the week and found
most of the offensive items had been removed.
A discussion followed on what steps should be taken. Wolff expressed the view that
we work in conjunction with city officials. Glaw and Lagunas said that if a person wants
to see that kind of material there is not much we can do about it. Ellmann proposed a
-- "Love In" as the only way to counter hate. Much discussion followed about the owners
motivation. It was the consensus of opinion that we would monitor the store to see if
the offensive materials return. If and when they do we will take appropriate action.
Buhrman will discuss this matter with Mayor Cuda and City Administrator John Lobaito
and report back to the group.
Hobson made motion to adjourn at 7:24 PM seconded by Doolan motion carries
unanimously.
