ILLINOIS DEPARTMENT OF CONSERVATION TREE PLANTING GRANT PROGRAM Pete Merkel explained the history of the City's involvement with the tree pl'anting program. Our two areas of interest are: A) Municipal Center landscape and B) Brookside Park. The deadline for the � application is February 23, 1994. The Parks and Recreation Department will be applying for a grant not to exceed $20,000. This would be a 50/50 grant with the City's responsibility being $10,000. The funding cycle is such that we will know the availability of the grant before the 1995-1996 budgeting process begins. RECONIlKENDATION: Alderman Bates motioned that Director Merkel be directed to apply for a grant for the above mentioned prospects not to exceed $20,000 with the understanding that the City would be contributing $10,000. Baird seconded. Vote 2-0 in favor. 2. REPORT ON PETERSEN PARK LAND ACQUISITION GRANT APPLICATION Director Merkel passed out the attached letter from the Illinois Department of Conservation explaining our status for a grant in the purchase of the Petersen Park addition. RECONIlKENDATION: It was recommended by the Committee to wait until the April 15, 1994 deadline to see if we qualify for the grant before taking any further action. Ls . LEATHER'S PARK PROGRESS REPORT The fundraising is going along successfully but the pro�ect has a long way to go. Many companies and community service groups have expressed an interest in donating but were waiting until the 1994 calendar for funds to become available. The final drawings have been sent in by the Leathers architects. Alderman Bates will set up a meeting with Whispering Oaks residents to discuss landscaping and parking concerns. Alderman Bates mentioned a call he received Sunday evening from one of Pro3ect Playgrounds coordinator who expressed dismay that she is receiving phone calls from Whispering Oaks residents. Report with the Parks location. Alderman Bates will bring this matter before the Whispering Oaks Committee. 4. UPDATE ON BIKE PATH DEVELOPMENT � Director Merkel attended a meeting by the MCCD on January 25 concerning the Northern Illinois Bike Path and its route. Maps and a funding chart were passed out to the committee memebers. Several options for the route through McHenry have been submitted by the MCDD. The committee and staff looked at each option with discussion revolving around the best route along Crystal Lake Road. The matter will be brought before the entire City Council on February 2, 1994. 5. DIRECTORS REPORT Items for bid nurchase - Because of the time frame involved in preparing the parks for Spring/Swnmer usage, Alderman Bates will bring the items for purchase before the Finance Committee on January 27, 1994. Boat Launch Uudate - Earth moving equipment has been placed on the property and work has begun. The pro�ects' progress has been slowed due to the weather conditions but the grading will be finished by late February. Capital Development (1994-1995) Budget - Director Merkel discussed the capital development renovation. A future workshop (May) will be used to discuss how the capital development program should proceed. At that time puhlich input will be invited. �- `- Page 3 5. DIRECTC�RS REPORT - (continued) New Business - Alderman Baird received a letter of concern about the lack of availability of hockey space. Future park plans include expanding the hockey area in McHenry. It was decided to leave the present hours for hockey as stated to Mrs. McCaffrey. Alderman Bates asked Director Merkel to look into a tot lot for the residents of Martins Woods.
