HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 5/26/1994 - Parks and Recreation Committee PARKS & RECREATION CON�lITTEE MEETING MINUTES May 26, 1994 PrE�sent: Chairman Alderman Bates, Alderman Bolger, Alderman Locke, Director of Parks and Recreation Merkel, City Administrator � Pet:erson OtYiers: Andy Glab The Meeting was called to order by Chairman Bates at 7:35P.M. PETERSEN PARK LAND ACQUISITION City Administrator Peterson reviewed the Loan Purchase status. Present loan is set at 7�, however the interest rate may be increased in the near future to 7 1/4%. The first of six installment payments will be due on February 1, 1995. Purchase price is $392,000. The current tenant pays 1600/month for use of the equestrian barn and surrounding land. Currently the city is able to fund the land holding trust by monies derived from land rental and interest on funds reserved for the land purchase. Alderman Boldger inquired whether the property might come under a community pro3ect loan. City Administrator Peterson expressed doubt. Director Merkel distributed information regarding rent costs, purchase amounts and grant application deadlines. The committee made the following recommendations: 1. Apply for a development grant for Brookside Park � and/or 2. Reapply for the purchase grant for Petersen Park. Discussion followed on these options and the potential for grant approval. Motion was made to apply for both grants. AYE: Bates, Bolger, Lawson NAY: None ABSENT: None NOTE: Grant for $216,000 has since been received. Director Merkel distributed a services contract preparing cost estimates for Brookside Park. FORT MCHENRY Fort McHenry was constructed during the week of May 16 with the dedication taking place on Sunday, May 22nd. Pro,ject completion will go on for the next few weeks. Alderman Lawson arrived at 7:55P.M. NEW BUSINESS Andy Glab requested that the Parks and Recreations Department trim areas on Oakwood Drive. Director Merkel indicated that all maintenance work of this nature was done by the Public Works Depatment, however he would share Mr. Glat's request with the � Director of Public Works, F. Batt. ` Mr. Glab also inquired about possible repairs to the walkways in Whispering Oaks. Director Batt will be informed of this request as well. Alderman Locke asked the Parks and Recreation Committee to asphalt the area in Fox Ridge Park presently used for ice skating in the winter. Alderman Locke felt that by asphalting the area the city could provide a rollerblading area for the summer. Director Merkel will confer with Director Batt on cost estimates and report back to the committee at their regularly scheduled meeting. � Alderman Lawson addressed the scheduling problems faced by the city in attempting to accomodate all the organizations requesting field usage. Discussion followed reviewing potential solutions. Alderman Bolger suggested using the land behind the new municipal building to construct future ball fields. It was determined to set the next committee meeting on Tuesday, June 21st at 7:30 P.M. at the Mass Horse Barn near Petersen Park. Meeting was ad3ourned by Chairman Bates at 10:30 P.M.
