MEMORANDUM
To: Public Works Committ Members
From: John A. Lobaito, ministrator
Date: January 26, 199
Subject: Intersection of Bonner Drive and Beach Road
Enclosed is a letter from Susan Pinkawa of 5010 Bonner Drive. Her home is located
on the northeast corner of Beach Drive and Bonner Road. Ms. Pinkawa's complaint
and concern is the reckless driving at this intersection where children wait at a bus
stop (map enclosed). Southbound vehicle drivers on Beach Road are cutting the
corner at high rates of speed when turning onto Bonner Drive. Ms. Pinkawa is
suggesting a 3-way stop at this intersection to control the traffic. Presently, there is
a stop sign for the westbound lane on Bonner Drive at the intersection of Beach Road.
Ms. Pinkawa believes adding stop signs on Beach Road will increase the safety at this
location.
The school bus tavels westbound on Bonner Drive then stops in front of Ms.
Pinkawa's home to pickup four children. The location of this stop allows the children
to board the bus without crossing the street. Moving the bus stop to another location
may not be practical.
Ms. Pinkawa will be in attendance at the Committee Meeting.

Dear Mayor Cuda,
I am a very concerned resident and parent that is worried about the safety of
my children and other neighborhood children that are waiting every morning for the
school bus on the corner of Bonner Drive and Beach in Lakeland Shore. At that
intersection, it is a T. At the present time, there is one stop sign that is located on
Bonner. The problem is that many people, especially high school students use this as
a shortcut to get to Crystal Lake road. You have people who come off Route 120 and
only have to go less than half a block before they make the turn onto Bonner, and
these people are still doing at least 35-40 mph as they are attempting to make the
turn. They are cutting the turn short and are barely missing the stop sign that is on
the north side of Bonner. At the present time, there are 4 kids waiting at that stop sign
for the bus to pick them up in the morning, and they have come inches away from
getting hit. I live on that corner and have attempted to dig out a spot for the kids to
stand in the snow bank so they won't get hit . With the past snow we have gotten,
some of the people that are going around the corner do not have good tires on their .
cars, and they are fish taiting as they come out of the turn. The kids are stand right
there! The bus driver has also had a problem getting the people to stop as she is
attempting to pick the kids up. She has already pulled into the left lane because the
cars won't stop because they are intent on making that tum as fast as they can.
I would like to find out what measures need to be taken to have a 3 way stop
put at that intersection. ( have already notified the McHenry police and they have
stated that they would put additional patrols at that intersection. This will be effective
for the first couple days that people receive tickets, but when the police presence is
removed, the same problem will continue. A permanent solution must be put into
. effect to slow down the traffic. Parents of the other students that are standing on the
corner and the surrounding neighbors have also expressed their concern with this
problem. Please let me know what I can do and what you intend to do about this
problem. I appreciate your assistance.
Sincerely,
