HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1998
The regular meeting of the McHenry Human Relations Commission was called to order
at 7:38 P.M. by Chair Pat Buhrman on Tuesday, February 24, 1998 in the Council
Chambers of the Municipal Center. The following members were present: Rev. Julie
Babenko, Susan Becker, Pat Buhrman, Sue Crisanti, Mayor Steven Cuda,Gwen
Doolan, Kari Horsch, Val Hobson, Jim Laursen, Michele Schrader, and Linda Wolff.
Absent: Pat Chaney, Liz Ellmann, Werner Ellmann, and John Christensen.
Approval of Minutes '
Laursen made a motion, seconded by Becker to approve the January 27, 1998 meeting
minutes. All ayes. Motion carried.

Ms. Buhrman read a quote of Pastor Rheinhold Neibuhr.

Proiect and Action Plans Discussion
Each Commission Member was asked about their specific plans. Some of the plans
included: the writing of a brochure, taking part in Fiesta Days, the making of a "Web
Page," following through with the check cashing project, sponsoring a "Cultural Club' at
the high schools, a traveling trunk project, sponsoring a "Words Can Hurt Day." Much
discussion followed on all of these various ideas. Mr. Cuda reminded us that all
projects would require finances. He directed us to speak to City Administrator, John
Lobaito to find out the proceedures required to properly fund our projects and action
plans.

It was decided that the group would break into three separate committees they are:
Public Relations - Susan Becker, Val Hobson, Kari Horsch, Jim Laursen, and Michele
Schrader
Ordinance - Rev. Julie Babenko, Gwen Doolan, and Jim Laursen
Finance - Pat Buhrman, Rev. Julie Babenko,and Val Hobson
Discussion of Racial Incident at McHenry Library
Ms. Buhrman related her account of what happened at the library. Much discussion
followed. Mr. Cuda cautioned everyone that we must remain positive and not only
discuss the negative. Ms. Doolan related her feelings regarding the incident.

Mr. Laursen made motion to adjourn at 9:10 P.M. seconded by Ms. Becker all ayes.
Motion carried.
