HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 1/27/1998 - Human Relations Commission CITY OF McHENRY HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 1997 � The regular meeting of the McHenry Human Relations Commission wsa called to order at 7:33 P.M. by Mayor Cuda on Tuesday, December 16, 1997 in the Council Chambers of the Municipal Center.• The following members were present: Susan Becker, Patricia Buhrman, Pat Chaney, .Susan Crisanti, Gwen Doolan, Liz Ellmann, Werner Ellmann, Kari Horsch, Michelle Schrader, and Linda Wolff. Absent: Jim Laursen, Julie Babenko, John Christensen and Valorie Hobson. Aparoval of Minutes Burhman made a motion, seconded by Ellmann, to approve the November 25, 1997 meeting minutes. All ayes. Motion carried. Election of Officers . The following officers were elected by the Commission, with the consent of Mayor Cuda. Cl�airperson........................Patricia Buhrman Vice-Chairperson .......................Linda Wolff SE;cretary................................Gwen Doolan � Motion ? to elect? Proposed Bylaws Item "F" of the proposed bylaws is currently being discussed for amendment. It was noted City Attorney McArdle is still concerned with membership including "sexual" and/or "sexual orientation." Buhrman stated that nationally "sexual preference" or "sexual orientation" is being used, and "handicapped" is now being replaced with "disabilities". The proposed mission statement was accepted by the full Commission. Projects It was agreed by all members to work on getting more community businesses to have available easier means for Latinos to cash checks. Michelle Schrader has agreed to go to Wal-Mart, Eagle, Target, and K-Mart. Buhrman will go to St. Paul's located in Dominicks. Sue Becker will go to Sullivans. Werner has already approached Jewel; and Kari Horsch will meet with other local banks. Michelle Schrader has provided literature that is being sponsored by the President � called, "Keeping It Real." This involves schools setting up a project that will bring their community closer. Michelle would like to form a club in her school. It was suggested she meet with teachers who could possibly head the club/project before any actions were taken. Human Relations Commission December 16, 1997 Minutes Page 2 � Adiournment . There being no further business to come before the Commission, Mayor Cuda made a motion, seconded by Gwen� Doolan, to adjourn. All ayes. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 P.M. . Please note that on January 19th, 1998 there will be a candle light vigil at the Presbyterian Church, located at 225 Calhoun, one block west of the Woodstock Square.
