HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 3/28/2000 - Human Relations Commission CITY OF McHENRY HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION MEETING `- TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 2000 Meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. The following members were present, Jason Glaw, Val Hobson, Gwen Doolan, Sue Becker, Werner Ellmann, Kari Horsch and Pat Buhrman. Excused absences Rev. Julie Babenko, Gail Wolfineyer, and Linda Wolff. Absent Jose Lagunas. Approval of Minutes Ellmann made the motion to approve minutes as read, seconded by Hobson motion carries unanimously. Old Business The Bylaw changes have been referred to legal staff. Becker and Buhrman reported on the census canvass of the Garden Quarter apartments. The Latino Coalition and the McHenry Human Relations Commission went door to door in the apartment complex to help residents understand the need to fill out the census forms. The experience was helpful to understand the dynamics of the apartments. We also handed out the Human Relations Commission Spanish Brochure. Good job Sue Becker. �.. Packets are being prepared to send out for the June 6th Town Hall Meeting on Racism. They will be sent to municipalities, schools, churches, civic organizations, local business leaders, and police departments. The first press release will go out the beginning of April. Doolan reported that the McHenry Library Web Site is up and running. Glaw has a copy of the original City of McHenry Human Relations Commission Web site that was designed by former member Jim Laursen. Horsch reported that the "respect pledge" will be instituted in all District 15 schools. We are waiting for Gina Swinney, assistant principal from Valley View to make the formal announcement. Good job Kari Horsch. New Business Ellmann discussed the need to support District 156 in their drive for another referendum. Much discussion followed. Ellmann made a motion to send a letter to the editor in support there was no second, motion failed. Adiournment Becker made motion to adjourn at 8:10 seconded by Horsch motion carries � unanimously.
