Attendees: Valorie Hobson, Joyce Story, Mayor Cuda, and Marci Geraghty
Attachments: Information gathered on the Internet by Valorie Hobson.
Discussion: The Committee members agreed upon the following tentative
outline of events. Your thoughts and ideas are most welcome!
Friday, December 31: Bonfire and fireworks. This will be in the evening. The exact
time has not been established
There was an idea to ask everyone attending the bonfire/fireworks
to bring a flashlight covered in crepe paper.
Saturday, January 1: A display of art and other local cultural displays at the Municipal
Center. Perhaps a reception attended by the local artists
exhibiting their craft.
A display of history and perhaps storytelling by the senior
population of McHenry.
A display hosted by the Landmark Commission on history in
McHenry County in the 20th Century.
Ice Fishing Derby on McCullom Lake.
Sunday, January 2: An Interfaith Service with the location to be determined. This could
be followed by a choir of local singers at the Municipal Center.
Ice Fishing Derby on McCullom Lake.
• Mayor Cuda will call Mark Justen regarding the possible donation of necessary
equipment for a time capsule. He will also gather information on presenting an
Ice Fishing Derby and construction of the bonfire from Director of Parks &
Recreation Pete Merkel.
• Valorie Hobson is busy gathering millennium information and ideas on the Internet. In
addition, she will find out how we can get our celebration listed on the web.
• Joyce Story will get in touch with McHenry Township about the use of their toboggan hill.
We thought this would be a fun event. She will also search for a local choir to sing on
Sunday, January 2, 1999.
• Marci Geraghty will call Nancy Fike of the Landmark Commission regarding some type
of historical display, folk dancing, or quilting bee at the Municipal Center on Saturday or
Sunday. She will also get in touch with a local caterer who has worked at the Trail of
History for possible food vending information. She will also get in touch with Melrose
Pyrotechnics for their thoughts on what time of day the fireworks display should begin.
• Annie Cuda is coordinating the art contest at the high schools for Millennium banners
, to be displayed throughout town. Prizes for the contest winner(s) must be
determined.
The next meeting of the Millennium Committee is Monday, January 25, 1999. Your
attendance will be greatly appreciated.

Even though, technically, the new century won't begin for another year, the lure and symbolism of the year 2000 is
much too seductive for the worid to ignore. "There's no dispute that the new millennium actually begins in the year
2001," acknowledces Edward hlcNally,co-chairman of the Washington-based Millennium Society. "The dynamics
of throwing a birthday party for Planet Earth a yeaz early include the magic of seeing the number 1999 turning into
2000 and launching a year of events and celebrations."
