PUBLIC WORKS CONA'IITTEE MEETING
7:30 P.M. - January 27, 1993
City Council Conference Room
In attendance: Committee Chairman Bolger and Committee member ponahue.
Member Lieder was excused due to another meeting at his work place.
Also in attenance: Mayor Busse, Public Works Director Fred Batt, City
Admini::trator Jerry Peterson, and Aldermen Serritella, Locke, Adams, and
Patterson.
A group of people from NIMC were there to discuss maintenance of water
and sewer mains servicing the hospital and ad3acent buildings.
The first item discussed was the request by NIMC officials and
recommEnded by the City staff that the City maintain the water and sewer
mains on Ring Road. The hospital will provide the easement for these
utilit3 lines, but it will continue to be their responsibility for the
maintenance of Ring Road.
This was approved by the Public Works Committee.
The second item discussed was a request by Ken Ehredt of 3310 W. Bull
Valley Road to hook up to the City sewer line. The Ehredts have two
children, a boy and a girl, and are having septic problems. They plan to
add a master bedroom and bathroom to their existing structure. If
permitted to hook up to the City sewer, the Ehredts understand the fees
they must pay, plus the 50% above the quarterly rate usage charge. Ken
Ehredt and his parents are seeking annexation of 6 acres of land. About
a year and a half ago, they deposited retained personnel fees with the
City and agreed to wait for annexation until the Knox farm annexation was
completed.
The Committee recommended approval of this request.
The thi.rd item discussed was the street maintenance program for 1993. On
the proposal which was handed out some time ago, Beach Drive was taken
off the list, because the portion of Beach Drive that was under
consideration is not in the City limits. However, Riverside Drive from
Elm Street to Broad Street was added to the list.
The committee recoromended to put the revised list out for bid and if
the bids are favorable, perhaps the entire program can be completed this
year.
The fourth item discussed was the proposed sidewalk maintenance program.
Again, it is the recommendation of the committee to put the sidewalk
program out for bid to see how much of it can be done this year. There
is also money in a sidewalk account that has been placed there by
developers. A decision must be made by the Council whether or not to use
that money for new sidewalks.

The fifth item discussed was the possible purchase of a used sky3acker.
Fred Batt reported that the present sky3acker does not extend high enough
to adequately serve the City, and that it is no longer safe to use and
will not pass the safety test. Fred feels that if his department is
given time and authority to look for a good used sky3acker they can find
one that will cost a fraction of what a new one would cost, and that it
will serve the City's needs for many years.
It is the committee's recommendation to the City Council that the
Public Works Department be give the authority to purchase a good used,
safe sky,jacker.
Finally, the condition of Orleans Street was discussed. Fred Batt
believes his crews can make the necessary repairs to Orleans Street.
The meeting ad3ourn.ed at 9:40 P.M.
