January 6, 2004
The meeting was called to order at 7:10 pm by Pat Schafer at the Petersen Farm.
Members present: Pat Schafer, Dawn Johnson, Gretchen Thomas, Judy Franks, Marya Dixon,
Ilene Wiedemann and Gerhard Rosenberg, and Marie Wilt.
Members absent: Greg Lofgren, Merle Janssen, Sue Hendrickson.
Colin Schultheis arrived at 8:30 p.m.
Guests: Danielle Miller is interested in the Commission and what we do.
December 2, 2003 Meeting Minutes: Corrections were noted and will be revised for the final
minutes. Marya Dixon moved to approve the minutes; Marie Wilt seconded no further
discussion and the motion carried.
Treasurer's Report: Judy Franks moved to approve, Gerhard Rosenberg seconded no
discussion and the motion carried.
Facade Grant Report: Gretchen Thomas moved to approve, Dawn Johnson seconded no
discussion and the motion carried.
Business:
Demolition Request: None were submitted by city staff.
Sub-Committee: No individual reports, Gretchen stated that she will be making meeting dates
for a number of committee's she is on.
Petersen Farm: It was noted that the house foundation, flooring, and silos are in need of either
repair or inspection. A salvaged water softener that requires installation for the house. Pat
Schafer and Dawn Johnson will write a letter to Pete Merkel regarding these items, requesting a
written reply. Gerhard Rosenberg will research the options and Pat Schafer will contact Ken
Fisk to restate his recommendations for the silo.
Meyer Material Farm Salvage: Pat Schafer noted that thank you notes to Allen Miller, Steve
Lang and the McHenry Fire Department will go out. Among the items salvaged were:
Doors
Cupboard
Hinges
Hardware
A Barn Door with"1903"carved on it
Water Softener for the Petersen Farm,which needs to be installed

Memorabilia at the Library: Pat Schafer reported that she contacted the McHenry Library to
book the meeting room for May 5, 2004 from 6:30—9:00 p.m. The room will hold up to 60
people. A press release to the NW Herald and a notice in the quarterly city newsletter will be
created and sent requesting local citizens to attend. Some of the ideas presented were to allow a
number of prominent citizens,possibly including Don Wattles, Ed Busse and Allen Miller to set
up a table of their family history, including pictures. The following motion was made:
Pat Schafer moved that on May 5, 2004 a memorabilia night at McHenry Library in
celebration of Preservation Week, Marie Wilt seconded no discussion and the motion
carried.
CLG: Dawn Johnson and Doug Martin are scheduling weekly meeting dates to compile the
application requirements for submission to the State of Illinois. Further information will be
given to the commission as it happens.
Preservation Ordinance: The revised ordinance is being completed by city staff and will be
disbursed to the commission members as soon as possible.
2004 Cemetery Walk: A team of members volunteered to begin the preparations for the 2004
Cemetery Walk. They include: Gretchen Thomas, Marya Dixon, Pat Schafer, Ilene Wiedemann,
Judy Franks, Marie Wilt and Dawn Johnson. The first meeting will be held at Dawn Johnson's
home on Friday January 16th at 1:15 p.m.
State Bank of the Lake: Pat Schafer reported that she was contacted by the designer of the new
bank. She explained that part of the banks design would include one wall within the bank that
would have a pictorial of McHenry's history. Pat will set up a meeting with the designer
(Mandy), commissioner's attending will include: Pat Schafer, Ilene Wiedemann, Marya Dixon,
Marie Wilt and Greg Lofgren.
Quilting Project: It was noted that on January 12, 2004 commissioner's Dixon, Wiedemann,
and Schafer will be interviewed at McHenry Middle School for a quilt project. It was also noted
that the commission's input for the Riverwood Elementary Quilt project has been completed.
Proposed McHenry Historic Society: Pat Schafer has set up a meeting with the director of the
Fox Lake Historical Society for Saturday, January 10th at 9:30 a.m. Members to attend are:
Dixon, Wiedemann, Wilt, Johnson, Schafer, and Franks. Notes will be taken and members will
report the results at the February meeting.

Other:
It was noted that Mayor Low will be delivering the state of McHenry address at the McHenry
Country Club on January 30, 2004. Commissioner's Schafer and Dixon will attend.
History Book: The following motion was made:
Gretchen Thomas moved that the commission should purchase the published McHenry
History table book from a local business, Ilene Wiedemann seconded no discussion and
the motion carried.
Walking Tours: Gretchen Thomas and Marya Dixon will meet at the Petersen Farm to begin
creating three separate brochures for the walking tours. The first meeting will be on January 23,
2004 at 1:30 p.m. Gerhard Rosenberg will take this opportunity to work on the farm house.
Thank you letter request: Dawn Johnson will send a reminder memo to Mayor Low to send a
letter of thanks to Duane Andreas for applying to the commission.
Barbian House: Pat Schafer noted that Holly Miller has sold the Barbian house. Holly donated
some ironwork monogrammed with the letter"B"to the commission. A thank you note will be
sent.
2004 Coloring Book: Colin Schultheis reported the progress of the new book. A number of
preliminary sketches were presented and approved. The book layout and design was discussed
•.— and Colin will make the suggested adjustments and resubmit to the commission at the February
meeting.
Demolition Contact: Dawn Johnson made a suggestion that the Community Development
Department should have one main contact on the commission. This contact would be
responsible for obtaining upcoming demolition requests, scheduling viewing of structures for the
commission members, scheduling salvage operations for the property and securing histories for
the structures. The histories will be written and stored at the commission offices at the Petersen
Farm. Gretchen Thomas nominated Gerhard Rosenberg for the position of Demolition Contact,
Gerhard agreed. Doug Martin will be notified.
Mentor System: Gretchen Thomas suggested that the commission work on a mentor system for
new members. This system would get new members up to speed on what the commission has
been trying to accomplish during the last few years. The overall opinion of the members was a
positive one. This will be implemented immediately for our newest members.
Dawn Johnson moved to adjourn at 9:00 p.m., Gretchen Thomas seconded no discussion and the
motion carried.
