HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 12/2/2003 - Landmark Commission The City of McHenry Landmark Commission Meeting Minutes December 2, 2003 The meeting was called to order at 7:24 pm by Greg Lofgren at the Petersen Farm. Members present: Greg Lofgren, Pat Schafer, Gretchen Thomas, Judy Franks, Merle Janssen, Marya Dixon, Ilene Wiedemann and Gerhard Rosenberg, Marie Wilt and Sue Hendrickson. Members absent: Dawn Johnson. November 4, 2003 Meeting Minutes: Pat Schafer moved to approve the minutes of the November 4, 2003 meeting. Sue Hendrickson seconded no discussion and the motion carried. Corrections were noted and will be given to Dawn Johnson. Treasurer's Report: Gretchen Thomas moved to approve, Gerhard Rosenberg seconded no discussion and the motion,carried. Facade Grant Report: Judy Franks moved to approve, Ilene Wiedemann seconded no discussion and the motion carried. Business: Marie Wilt: Marie Wilt was congratulated upon the mayoral appointment to the Landmark Commission and welcomed to the group. Sub-Committee Report: Marya Dixon will be sending an interview form to Glen Petersen, as he has shown interest in giving an interview. ' Petersen Farm: Greg Lofgren found a file cabinet to add to the office and Sue Hendrickson is looking at a display counter to add as well. Demolitions: There are no demolition requests from the city. Lori Wilhelm's Artwork: Greg Lofgren reported that he inspected the works purchased by the City of McHenry. Two of the twelve were of McHenry(house doorways and the NIMC Hospital). Others were of historic structures in Marengo, Richmond, etc. It is the commission's consensus that Lori's artworks be displayed throughout McHenry's municipal center. Expenses: Gretchen Thomas moved to reimburse Ilene Wiedemann in the amount of$7.08 for expenses of copies of old prints that will be used by the commission. Marya Dixon seconded no discussion and the motion carried. New Business: The Landmark Preservation Council of Illinois: The Landmark Preservation Council of Illinois requested nominations for endangered historic structures and sites. No suggestions were submitted at this meeting, but it was noted that the Landmark Commission watch the Landmark School. Landmark Scrapbook: A scrapbook featuring 2004 Landmark Commission events and activities will be created and maintained by Judy Franks. 1 2004 National Preservation Week: Greg Lofgren attended a meeting on November 17, 2003 at Gloria Mack's residence to discuss county wide plans for Preservation Week(May 3-8 2004). Other Now communities in attendance were Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Bull Valley and Marie Wilt representing the Civil War Round Table along with Nancy Fike of the County Museum. The theme will be"Local History". Diana Kenney submitted a logo; Greg Lofgren suggested six activities that would be relevant to celebrate that week: 1. McHenry's Coloring Book I & II 2. Highlighting the oldest businesses in a community(ex: Miller Monument and Justen Furniture and Funeral Home) 3. Walking Tour 4. Highlighting inventors and inventions 5. Trivia Contest 6. A memorabilia session with speakers and local resident's participation to share local history, photos, and collections. (Pat will check with the local library to see if they have open dates in May to hold a session). Woodstock Opera House: No change of management of the opera house was made. Riverwood Quilt Project: Gretchen Thomas reported that Dawn Johnson asked her help with the 5th grade class project. Dawn Johnson will give further information at the January meeting. Tile/Quilt Project: Greg Lofgren reported that he is participating in another quilt project at McHenry Middle School. It is scheduled on January 12, 2004. Local residents will be interviewed by the 7th grade students. Route 120 Farm Salvage: On December 6, 2003 at 9:00 am, members from the Landmark Commission will conduct salvage at the farm located on Hwy 120 which is owned by Meyer Gravel Co. A list of items to save and tools needed were discussed. The salvage items will be stored at the Petersen Farm. Steve Lang from the fire department was contacted and asked the possibility of some firemen to remove the verge boards under the gables located on the east, south and west side of the house. Historic Society: Gretchen Thomas suggested that a historic society of McHenry be investigated for a possible reality. Pat Schafer will contact Ruth Sutton of The Fox Lake Historic Society to meet with the Landmark Commission. The sub-committee consists of: Marya Dixon, Sue Hendrickson, Ilene Wiedemann, Marie Wilt and Pat Schafer. Upcoming Events: Marie Wilt reported the date of a "Victorian Christmas" at the Dole Mansion in Crystal Lake is scheduled for the month December 2003, on Saturday and Sunday's from 1-5 pm. Gretchen Thomas moved to adjourn at 8:28 pm; Sue Hendrickson seconded and the motion carried. 2
