July 1, 2003
The meeting was called to order at 7:18 PM by Pat Schafer at the McHenry Municipal Center.
Members present: Marya Dixon,Merle Janssen, Pat Schafer, Dawn Johnson, Gretchen Thomas
and Sue Hendrickson, Gerhard Rosenberg,Judy Franks. Merle Janssen departed the meeting at
8:00 to attend another meeting; Greg Lofgren joined the commission meeting at 9:00 pm.
Members absent: Ilene Wiedemann,Karen James.
Guests Present: Colin and Cathy Schultheis.
June 3,2003 Meeting Minutes: Gretchen Thomas moved to approve the minutes of the June 3,
2003 meeting. Gerhard Rosenberg seconded no discussions and the motion carried.
Treasurer's Report June 3,2003: The treasurer's report was not available in time for this
meeting; it will be tabled until the August meeting.
Facade Grant Report June 3,2003: The façade grant report was not available in time for this
meeting; it will be tabled until the August meeting.
Business:
Gerhard Rosenberg: Mayor Althoff has officially appointed Gerhard to the commission; we
welcome him and look forward to working with him.
Sub Committee Reports:
Plaguing: Any plaguing for buildings in McHenry will be put on hold until the ordinance
changes are complete and in place. Application for honorary plaques now will require actual
designation applications under the ordinance. Gretchen Thomas and Greg Lofgren will work on
streamlining the process. No further honorary plaques will be issued.
Walking Tour Brochures: Gretchen Thomas and Marya Dixon coordinated the cleanup of the
surveys that have been compiled,this will streamline the process of creating a new design of the
brochure. The old brochure was taken to Minute Man Press for a quote to reproduce it. As the
brochure is restructured they will return for additional quotes. Histories and pictures will be
written and taken, and a new layout will be setup for this.
Continuing Business:
Demolition Requests/Facade Grant Applications: The Jack Franks building on 120 and
Crystal Lake Road is still in the talking stages;Doug Martin is still attempting to make an
appointment for commission members to view the foundation and basement. The old power
company building owner on Pearl and Riverside has not come back for the façade grant
application as yet; Pat Schafer will keep the commission updated.

Petersen Barn and Silos: Greg Lofgren reported that he has met with Pete Merkel from Parks
and Recreation regarding a number of items on the Petersen property. Attached is a copy of the
items that were discussed at the meeting. In summary,the commission will be allowed access to
the property after Fiesta Days has completed; security and the number of members from our
commission that will have access to that knowledge. Pete was very flexible with our requests for
our exclusive use of specific areas of the farm. Pete is also going to speak to Doug Martin
regarding the grant that the commission applied for in reference to the maintenance of the silos.
Historic District Survey: Nothing will be done for the moment; this item will be pending until
updates to the current ordinance have passed the city council.
Resident Interview Forms: No interviews have been done,however Mr.Nye is to be
scheduled as soon as possible. Pat Schafer and Marya Dixon will conduct the interview at Mr.
Nye's convenience. The commission determined to target two interviews per month, a list of
prospective interviewee's is being compiled and requests sent to those residents.
CLG: No updates were reported.
Greg Lofgren: Greg Lofgren has determined the correct ordinance and has reviewed it for the
corrections that the commission would like to see sent to city council for approval. He had a
question or two regarding the phrasing of the states suggested outline. He will be in contact with
Catherine O'Connor from IHPA for answers.
New Business:
�`m' Art in the Park: The approval by the Chamber of Commerce of our application to have a booth
at Art in the Park was approved. They will waive the normal fee, set the commission up as a
vendor,and we will have to pay the Chamber 15%of the sales. Colin Schultheis will be present
in our booth to sign the coloring books that will be sold. Items intended to be in the booth are:
Coloring books,preservation brochures from the state of Illinois,three foam boards with pictures
of local homes that have various styles of architecture,upcoming events flyers,pictures of the
Petersen Farm,miscellaneous items salvaged from other locations within McHenry to show to
the public. A sub-committee of Pat Schafer,Gretchen Thomas, Dawn Johnson, Marya Dixon
and Sue Hendrickson will gather in the next week to design the boards. Pat Schafer is looking at
obtaining an 8' banner to string across the front of the tent in the park.
Cemetery Walk: Pat Schafer is continually working on this project.
Chamber of Commerce: The Chamber has requested old pictures of"Marine Days" for an
upcoming project. Marya Dixon received 1938 photos of Marine Days from Hank Buch which
she is offer to the Chamber for their use. Pat Schafer will see that they receive copies of what we
have in storage.

Other: The following motions were made:
Sue Hendrickson moved to reimburse Dawn Johnson in the amount of$18.50
for charges for a poster from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This
poster was to be used for our celebration of National Preservation Week Judy
Franks seconded no further discussion and the motion carried.

Sue Hendrickson made a motion to purchase a vinyl banner sign that has
the Landmark name in dark green letters on a white background to be
utilized for booth identification for McHenry's Art in the Park Marya Dixon
seconded no discussion and the motion carried.
At 9:00 pm,Mayor Althoff joined the meeting and discussed the new boundaries for the
proposed historic district. Mayor Althoff suggested that members of the commission meet with
interim mayor Sue Low and Doug Martin to discuss the procedure for a presentation to the city
council proposing the new boundaries and ask for further direction from the council.
The Mayor also presented the commission with a plaque honoring longtime commissioner Lori
Wilhelm. Pat Schafer will see that Lori is given the plaque as soon as possible. Mayor Althoff
also stated that the city is looking at purchasing more of Lori's artwork of McHenry structures.
The meeting now went into executive session with Mayor Althoff.
Greg Lofgren moved to adjourn,Pat Schafer seconded no discussion and the motion carried.
