HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 5/1/2001 - Landmark Commission • , AL/ LANDMARK COMMISSION p D,, _' MINUTES S� ""� May 1, 2001 Pam" Chairperson Lofgren called the regular meeting of the Landmark Commission to order at 7:23 p.m. Members present were: Judy Franks, Merle Janssen, Dawn Johnson, Hank Nell, Pat Schafer and Shelly Trost. Members absent: Gretchen Thomas, Ilene Wiedeman and Lori Wilhelm. MINUTE APPROVAL Motion by Nell, seconded by Janssen to accept the April 3, 2001 minutes adding both Dawn Johnson and Gretchen Thomas to the Heritage Days subcommittee. Voting Aye: Franks, Janssen,Johnson, Lofgren,Nell, Schafer, and Trost. Voting Nay: None Absent: Thomas, Wiedeman and Wilhelm Motion carried. TREASURER'S REPORT Chairperson Lofgren noted no financial activity had occurred over the past thirty days. Motion by Johnson, seconded by Trost to accept the Treasurer's Report as presented. Voting Aye: Franks, Janssen, Johnson, Lofgren,Nell, Schafer and Trost. Voting Nay: None Absent: Thomas, Wiedeman and Wilhlem OLD BUSINESS HERITAGE DAYS-Commission Member Schafer distributed information regarding the proposed Heritage Days event at the Hickory Creek Farm site. The information included a site plan as well. Mr. Vern and Mrs. Jean Schiller have agreed to assist the Commission in obtaining agricultural exhibits. Some discussion followed. Commission Member Schafer noted two tents will contain up to ten exhibits each, some farm implements will be displayed on the grassy area surrounding the tents and a pony corral, for the children, will be included. Refreshments should also be included. Ms. Fike,McHenry County Historical Museum Executive Director will also be contacted. Advertising will be handled through the Mayor's Office. Hours would be 10:00 a.m. through 2:00 p.m. on both June 23`d and 24t. Hayrides from Petersen Park will also be investigated. The viewing of videotapes highlighting agricultural events will also be investigated. 70-rf 711-e-e Landmark Commission Minutes May 1, 2001 Page Two A lengthy discussion followed regarding the use of the barn's interior. Use of City police and local Boy Scout troops for parking was discussed. In the event of rain the event will be cancelled. Chairperson Lofgren suggested all advertising should include this disclaimer. It was the consensus of the Commission to cancel the June meeting and schedule an additional Commission meeting on Tuesday, May 22nd Chairperson Lofgren at the Commission's concurrence vacillated from the printed agenda and addressed New Business next. NEW BUSINESS NEWSLETTER-Chairperson Lofgren informed the Commission the following information would be included in the City of McHenry's June newsletter: • Historic walking tours during Fiesta Days • Heritage Days information • Member vacancy information OTHER-Chairperson Lofgren noted the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected officials was scheduled for tomorrow, May 2nd at 7:30 p.m. Commission members noted they had received invitations. Chairperson Lofgren returned to the printed order of the agenda. OLD BUSINESS MAIN STREET GARAGE-Chairperson Lofgren noted he had been having difficulty in reaching the garage owner, Mr. Bruce Klontz. The Commission agreed to send Mr. Klontz a written letter addressing the proposed controlled demolition of his garage on Main Street. WALGREENS/POCKET PARK-No further information is available. Mayor Althoff is still attempting to schedule a meeting with Commission representative Nell. ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY VIDEOTAPING-Chairperson Lofgren requested a date be scheduled to conduct a video taping of the historical architectural survey procedure. This videotape could then be used for instructional purposes, etc. Commission member Trost will work with Chairperson Lofgren to complete this taping sometime this summer. Landmark Commission Minutes May 1, 2001 Page Three WALKING TOUR VIDEOTAPING-Chairperson Lofgren suggested this taping be conducted in the near future as this year's tours have been scheduled for July. Chairperson Lofgren or former Commission Member Fike can conduct the Riverside Drive/Green Street tour. Commission Member Johnson offered to operate the video camera. The Riverside Drive area will be completed first. Attempts will be made to contact Ms. Fike. Some discussion regarding the location of the historic Riverside Drive photographs occurred. NEW BUSINESS LPCI'S TEN MOST ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES-Chairperson Lofgren stated the Commission's concerns regarding East Campus have been addressed. Current East Campus Administrative representatives have stated East Campus High School façade will remain intact. No other"designated"historic properties appear to be endangered at this time. OLD BUSINESS Chairperson Lofgren reported, as per Commission direction, letters had been sent to both the lady who had sent the Landmark Commission the historic artifact, and to Community Development Director Napolitano regarding the installation of a stone within the sidewalk designating the historic Owen cabin site. Commission member Nell suggested the Commission contract John Miller of Miller Monument to conduct the installation. PRESERVATION ORDINANCE-A tentative date of May 30th was discussed for the formal presentation by the Commission to request council permission to move forward with the historic district designation of Main Street. The Commission will also request city assistance with the preservation ordinance designation criteria, specifically the property notification requirement and the property identification map. Some discussion followed. OTHER BUSINESS Landmark Commission Minutes May 1, 2001 Page Four Commission member Trost noted Landmark School, in conjunction with the newly adopted year-round school calendar has announced their intent to repaint this structure as well as beautifying the interior and exterior. Some discussion followed. Chairperson Lofgren also noted Landmark Commission Principal, Denise Welter, requested the Commission conduct a historical presentation sometime in the future. ADJOURNMENT Motion by Schaefer, seconded by Johnson to adjourn the meeting at 8:27 p.m. Voting Aye: Franks, Janssen, Johnson, Lofgren, Schafer and Trost Voting Nay: Nell Absent: Thomas, Wiedemann, and Wilhelm Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 8:27 p.m.
