MINUTES JANUARY 4, 2000
THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:18 PM BY CHAIRPERSON GREG LOFGREN AT
THE MUNICIPAL CENTER. MEMBERS PRESENT INCLUDED: NANCY FIKE, MERLE
JANSSEN, DAWN JOHNSON, GREG LOFGREN, HANK NELL, GRETCHEN THOMAS, SHELLY
TROST, AND LORI WILHELM . MEMBERS ABSENT: . RICHARD KRATOCHVIL, BOB
NOVAK, AND PAT SCHAFER.
HANK NELL MOVED TO APPROVE THE MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER MEETING. DAWN
JOHNSON SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED.
EXPENSES INCLUDED: $126.72 TO RON NELSON FOR TRAVEL EXPENSE AND $8.00 FOR
THE ALGONQUIN CALENDAR. THE BALANCE STANDS AT$9,475.15. HANK NELL MOVED
THE TREASURER'S REPORT BE ACCEPTED, LORI WILHELM SECONDED THE MOTION,
AND THE MOTION CARRIED.
NANCY FIKE SUMMARIZED THE SECOND AND LAST DAY OF THE THOMPSON CABIN
DISMANTLING ON DECEMBER 8, 1999. IT WAS COMPLETED IN TWO DAYS , NAILS WERE
PULLED IN THE BOARDS AND THE CITY CREW SHOWED UP TO HAUL THE PIECES TO THE
PARK DEPARTMENTS KNOX BARN FOR STORAGE. NANCY SHOWED A DIAGRAM OF THE
TIMBER NUMBERING SYSTEM, DRAWN BY BILL GODSCHALL, TO BE USED FOR
RE-ASSEMBLY. THE GRAVEL PIT PEOPLE CAME WITH A FORK LIFT TO HELP LIFT
TIMBERS. NANCY PUT TOGETHER A SMALL SAMPLING OF ARTIFACTS WHICH ARE IN
THE LANDMARK COMMISSION'S DRAWERS IN THE ALDERMAN'S CONFERENCE ROOM.
GREG LOFGREN TALKED BRIEFLY ABOUT THE MAIN STREET PROGRAM AND THE
CERTIFIED CITY PROGRAM. GREG MENTIONED THAT THE BROCHURES ARE LOCATED
AT VARIOUS PLACES IN THE CITY AND PAM ALTHOFF INCLUDES A BROCHURE WITH
CITY'S NEW RESIDENT PACKETS.
GREG MENTIONED HE HAD TALKED TO PAM ABOUT THE PROPOSED RIVERWALK. THE
RIVERWALK COMMITTEE MEETS AT THE MUNICIPAL CENTER ON JANUARY 18, 2000 AT
NOON. THE COMMITTEE WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS WITH NEW IDEAS. THE CITY HAS
APPROVED $10,000 FOR THE INITIAL RIVERWALK STUDY. NANCY FIKE INFORMED THE
COMMISSION THAT A 1925 PLAINDEALER ARTICLE CONCERNED A PROPOSED
RIVERFRONT IMPROVEMENT. THE NEWLY FOUNDED KIWANIS CLUB OF MCHENRY
WANTED TO IMPROVE BOONE CREEK. THE PROPOSAL INCLUDED A HARBOR AT THE
CREEK'S MOUTH SO PEOPLE WOULD BE ABLE TO PARK AND SHOP. THE COST WAS
FIGURED AT$16,000. THE MONEY WOULD COME FROM PRIVATE DONATIONS. TIED TO
THE IMPROVEMENTS WAS AN AMUSEMENT PARK TO DRAW PEOPLE TO MCHENRY.
DISCUSSION CONTINUED AMONG MEMBERS CONCERNING THE PROPOSE RIVERWALK.
GREG INTRODUCED A DISCUSSION ON THE BUDGET FOR THE LANDMARK COMMISSION.
A MOTION WAS MADE BY NANCY FIKE, SECONDED BY SHELLY TROST, AND
APPROVED, UNANIMOUSLY, TO REQUEST THE FOLLOWING BUDGET ITEMS FOR
THE LANDMARK COMMISSION:
1. $30,000 SET ASIDE FOR THE ASSEMBLY OF THE THOMPSON CABIN WHEN
SITE IS DETERMINED.
NANCY FIKE STATED THAT$25,000,WAS SPENT TO RESTORE THE
GANNON CABIN AT THE MCHENRY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
IN THE MID-1990'S.
2. $2,000 TO SURVEY THE PETERSEN HISTORIC SITE'S STRUCTURES. THIS
WOULD BE USED TO DETERMINE RESTORATION PRIORITIES ON THE
BUILDINGS AND STRUCTURES.
3. $1,000 FOR A DIGITAL CAMERA. AS THE SURVEY CONTINUES PICTURES
NEED TO BE TAKEN, AND PHOTOGRAPHS SHOULD BE TAKEN OF
FUTURE DEMOLITIONS AND FACADE CHANGES UNDER THE
PRESERVATION ORDINANCE.
4. $2,000 TO SURVEY KNOX PROPERTY STRUCTURES. THIS WOULD BE USED
TO DETERMINE RESTORATION PRIORITIES ON THE HOUSE AND THE
BARN.
5. $500 FOR MEMBERS TO ATTEND CONFERENCES. THESE MEETINGS HELP
MEMBERS KEEP CURRENT ON PRESERVATION INFORMATION.
6. $1,500 TO CONVERT THE BUSINESS SECTIONS'SLIDE SHOW INTO VIDEO.
A SLIDE SHOW OF THE HISTORIC BUSINESS SECTIONS OF MCHENRY
HAS BEEN MADE, BUT A BETTER PRESENTATION COULD BE MADE
WITH A NARRATED VIDEO.
THE FORMAL MEETING WAS ADJOURNED AT 8:15 PM ON A MOTION BY DAWN JOHNSON
AND SECONDED BY GRETCHEN THOMAS . THE MEETING THEN CONTINUED AS A
INFORMAL WORKING MEETING AS MEMBERS WORKED ON THE SURVEYS OF THE MAIN
STREET AREA. THIS PART OF THE MEETING BROKE UP AT 9:35 PM.
