HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 8/3/1998 - Landmark Commission THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES AUGUST 3, 1998 THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:26 PM BY CHAIRPERSON NANCY FIKE AT THE FORMER PETER SCHAEFER MARKET AT 3932 W. MAIN STREET. MEMBERS PRESENT INCLUDED: MARIA ARZA, JIM DORAN, NANCY FIKE, GREG LOFGREN, HANK NELL, BOB NOVAK, ANN WEST, LORI WILHELM, AND SARA WILHELM. BARB BYRON AND CAROL JEAN SMITH WERE ABSENT. GUESTS PRESENT WERE EVELYN SCHAEFER ALBRIGHT, LORRAINE SCHAEFER GAUSDEN, HUGH KIRK, AND RICH ROSTRON, REPORTER FOR THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE. THE JULY 7, 1998 MINUTES WERE READ. A MOTION WAS MADE BY LORI WILHELM TO ACCEPT THE MINUTES. BOB NOVAK SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED. GREG LOFGREN REPORTED THE BALANCE IN THE LANDMARK COMMISSION BUDGET IS $17,985.51. TRANSACTIONS INCLUDED $110.00 FOR COPIES OF THE HANDOUTS FOR THE WALKING TOURS. SESQUICENTENNIAL BOOKS SOLD AT THE WALKING TOURS BROUGHT IN$18.00. HANK NELL MOVED THE TREASURER'S REPORT BE ACCEPTED. MARIA ARZA SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED. HANK NELL REPORTED THAT THE ZBA DENIED THE SCHOOL DISTRICT 15 REQUEST FOR A VARIANCE IF THAT BODY PURCHASED THE PACE PROPERTY FOR OFFICE AND PARKING SPACE. HANK ALSO REPORTED THAT THE OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING AT 1228 N. GREEN STREET HAD BEEN PAINTED AND THE NEW AWNINGS WILL BE COMING IN 3 WEEKS. NANCY FIKE INTRODUCED EVELYN ALBRIGHT AND LORRAINE GAUSDEN. THE DAUGHTERS OF PETER SCHAEFER RELATED THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING AND THEIR FATHER'MARKET. THEY ALSO SPOKE OF LIFE GROWING UP IN THE MAIN STREET AREA. THE COMMISSION MEMBERS WILL VIEW MCHENRY DRUG AT 7:00 PM ON AUGUST 17 FOR THE FINAL INSPECTION IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE FACADE GRANT PROCESS. GREG LOFGREN DELIVERED THE PHOTO DISPLAY TO THE LIBRARY. IT WILL STAY THERE UNTIL THE END OF SEPTEMBER. THE LIBRARY WILL RELEASE A PRESS BULLETIN IN THEIR HERALD COLUMN. MARIA ARZA REPORTED NO PROGRESS ON THE WEB PAGE. GREG LOFGREN REPORTED APPROXIMATELY 60 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE WALKING TOURS. ON THE SATURDAY MAIN STREET TOUR BILL AND GRETCHEN THOMAS ALLOWED THE GROUP TO TOUR THE INSIDE OF THE HARRISON-SMITH HOUSE. THE RIVERSIDE TOURS WERE ALLOWED TO VISIT INSIDE THE RIVERSIDE HOTEL AND VIEW AN UNRESTORED ROOM. GREG LOFGREN STARTED ORGANIZING THE FILES AT CITY HALL. THE COMMISSION WILL MEET AT 8:00 AM ON AUGUST 17 TO VIEW THE EPPEL PROPERTY. LORI WILHELM SHOWED THE COMMISSION THE PROPOSED DESIGN FOR THE LANDMARK COMMISSION BROCHURE. MEMBERS DISCUSSED THE COVER AND THE INFORMATION TO BE INCLUDED ON THE INSIDE OF THE BROCHURE. COMMISSION MEMBERS NEED TO CALL PAM ALTHOFF IF THERE IS A COMMITTEE MEETING OF THREE OR MORE MEMBERS. THIS IS SO A NOTICE CAN BE POSTED AT THE MUNICIPAL CENTER SATISFYING THE OPEN MEETINGS ACT. GREG LOFGREN REPORTED ON THE PROPOSED SURVEY AREAS . MAPS WERE HANDED OUT AND AREA 2 WAS ENLARGED TO GO SOUTH ON CRYSTAL LAKE ROAD TO LILLIAN. THE STRUCTURE SURVEY FORM WAS DISCUSSED AND ADDITIONS WERE MADE. AT THE NEXT MEETING THE COMMISSION WILL NEED TO SET SOME TENTATIVE TIME SCHEDULES TO PREPARE FOR THE SURVEY. THE COMMISSION WILL ALSO NEED TO START A PROCESS FOR GETTING VOLUNTEERS. AFTER SCHOOL STARTS SARA WILHELM WILL TALK TO TEACHERS TO SEE ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF USING HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE SURVEY PROCESS. THE NEXT MEETING OF THE ALLIANCE OF COUNTY HISTORICAL AND PRESERVATION GROUPS WILL BE AT 7:30 PM ON SEPTEMBER 23 AT CARY STREET STATION. THE SPEAKER WILL BE ROCCO ZUCARRO FROM IDOT SPEAKING ABOUT SOME POSSIBLE FUNDING. NANCY ASKED IF ANYONE WAS INTERESTED IN GOING TO THE STATE OF ILLINOIS HISTORICAL PRESERVATION CONFERENCE ON SEPTEMBER 17-19 IN ELGIN. THEY HAVE MANY INTERESTING SEMINARS AND TOURS. INTEREST WAS EXPRESSED AND THOSE MEMBERS WILL CONTACT NANCY. NANCY DISCUSSED A CHART THAT THE CITY OF WOODSTOCK USES TO GO THROUGH THE DIFFERENT GOVERNMENTAL DEPARTMENTS WHEN AN HISTORIC BUILDING IS GOING TO HAVE WORK DONE TO IT. MARIA ARZA MOVED FOR ADJOURNMENT AT 9:03 PM. ANN WEST SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED.
