HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 6/2/1998 - Landmark Commission THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES JUNE 2, 1998 THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:18 PM BY CHAIRPERSON NANCY FIKE. MEMBERS PRESENT INCLUDED: MARIA ARZA, NANCY FIKE, GREG LOFGREN, HANK NELL, BOB NOVAK, AND, CAROL JEAN SMITH, THOSE ABSENT WERE BARB BYRON, ANN WEST, LORI WILHELM, AND SARA WILHELM. RICH R., CHICAGO TRIBUNE REPORTER, WAS ALSO PRESENT. THE MAY 5, 1998 MINUTES WERE READ. A MOTION WAS MADE BY HANK NELL TO ACCEPT THE MINUTES. MARIA ARZA SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED. GREG LOFGREN REPORTED THE BALANCE IN THE LANDMARK COMMISSION BUDGET IS $18,094.24. TRANSACTIONS INCLUDED $60.00 TO DISPLAY SUPPLY COMPANY AND$4.13 TO BT OFFICE PRODUCTS. MARIA ARZA MOVED THE TREASURER'S REPORT BE ACCEPTED. BOB NOVAK SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED. NANCY FIKE THANKED EVERYONE FOR THEIR WORK ON THE PRESERVATION ORDINANCE, AND SHE CONGRATULATED EVERYONE ON ITS PASSAGE BY THE CITY COUNCIL. THE COMMISSION'S WORK WILL NOW BEGIN. DOING SURVEYS OF THE TOWN WILL BE THE FIRST JOB. STRUCTURES 50 YEARS AND OLDER WILL HAVE TO BE SURVEYED. BY THE JULY MEETING NANCY WILL HAVE SAMPLES OF VARIOUS SURVEYS. A SUBCOMMITTEE WILL BE FORMED TO FINALIZE THE SURVEY FORM. AFTER THE SURVEY FORM IS FINALIZED VOLUNTEERS WILL BE NEEDED. THERE IS NO INFORMATION AS OF YET ON THE PETERSEN PLAQUING CEREMONY. BOB NOVAK INFORMED THE COMMISSION THAT JIM BECKER OF MCHENRY DRUG HAS NOT COME TO A CONCLUSION ON SIGNS; HOWEVER, THE WORK FOR WHICH THE GRANT WAS AWARDED HAS BEEN COMPLETED. CAROL JEAN SMITH WILL WRITE A LETTER TO JIM BECKER ASKING FOR AN INSPECTION DATE. HANK NELL PERCEIVES THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE OWNER OF THE BUILDING AT THE SOMETHING SPECIAL SHOP. WORK HAS NOT STARTED . HANK INFORMED APRIL SKARBECK THAT THE GRANT WILL BE PULLED IF WORK IS NOT STARTED IN A TIMELY MANNER. • NANCY FIKE INTRODUCED THE TOPIC OF IMPROVEMENT GRANT QUALIFICATIONS. NANCY REVIEWED HER CONVERSATION CONCERNING SIGNS AS PART OF THE FACADE IMPROVEMENT GRANT PROGRAM. NANCY FIKE AND MARIA ARZA WILL WORK ON A LIST OF IMPROVEMENTS THE COMMISSION WOULD APPROVE AND NOT APPROVE. GREG LOFGREN WILL CONTINUE AS SECRETARY AND TREASURER. MARIA ARZA WILL BECOME VICE-PRESIDENT. CAROL JEAN SMITH WILL CONTINUE AS CORRESPONDING SECRETARY. OFFICERS WERE APPROVED BY A VOICE VOTE. GREG WILL BE CHANGING THE LANDMARK DISPLAY CASES TO FEATURE PHOTOS OF PAST MARINE DAY EVENTS. GREG REPORTED ON THE PROGRESS OF THE PLAQUED BUILDING'S DISPLAY. HANK NELL FINISHED THE DISPLAY BOARD, CAROL JEAN SMITH ORGANIZED THE PICTURES, AND GREG MOUNTED THE PHOTOS ON NEW BACKING BOARDS. GREG HAS PUT OUT THE PUBLICITY. THE TEXT FOR EACH PICTURE HAS BEEN TYPED BY PAM ALTHOFF'S OFFICE, AND THE COMMISSION MADE SUGGESTIONS. NANCY FIKE ASKED FOR A MEETING OF WALKING TOUR GUIDES IN EARLY JULY. GREG WILL SET A DATE. MARIA ARZA REPORTED NO PROGRESS ON THE WEB PAGE. SHE WILL CALL PAM ALTHOFF. HANK NELL MOVED THAT THE COMMISSION JOIN THE MCHENRY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY. MARIA ARZA SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED. GREG LOFGREN REPORTED ON THE FIRST MEETING OF THE STEERING COMMITTEE OF THE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN UPDATE. GREG REPORTED ON THE MEMBERS AND THE COMPANY IN CHARGE OF PUTTING THE PLAN TOGETHER. THE FACILITATORS ARE INTERESTED IN HISTORIC SITES. THE WORK OF THE COMMITTEE SHOULD TAKE ABOUT A YEAR. NANCY FIKE GOT A CALL FROM JOE NAPOLITANO CONCERNING THE TWO HOMES WEST OF VALLEY VIEW SCHOOL ON ROUTE 120. THESE STRUCTURES ARE PART OF AN AGREEMENT WITH MEYER MATERIAL AND THE LANDMARK COMMISSION. THE BASIS OF THIS AGREEMENT IS FOR THE COMMISSION TO DETERMINE THE WORTHINESS OF THESE STRUCTURES AND, HOPEFULLY, HELP TO FIND GOOD OWNERS FOR THESE HISTORIC STRUCTURES. THE STRUCTURES MAY HAVE TO BE MOVED. THE COMMISSION NEEDS MORE INFORMATION ON THIS AGREEMENT. CHAIRPERSON FIKE HAS BEEN ASKED BY THE CITY TO WRITE A BRIEF HISTORY OF MCHENRY, AS AN INTRODUCTION, FOR THE CITY BUDGET. HANK NELL MOVED FOR ADJOURNMENT AT 8:24 PM. BOB NOVAK SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED.
