HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 4/7/1998 - Landmark Commission THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING MINUTES APRIL 7, 1998 THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:14 PM BY CHAIRPERSON NANCY FIKE. MEMBERS PRESENT INCLUDED:MARIA ARZA, BARB BYRON, NANCY FIKE, GREG LOFGREN, HANK NELL, BOB NOVAK, CAROL JEAN SMITH, ANN WEST, LORI WILHELM, AND SARA WILHELM. PAM ALTHOFF WAS PRESENT AS A GUEST. THE MARCH 3, 1998 MINUTES WERE CORRECTED IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: PAGE 2, PARAGRAPH 4 - "MAY IS PRESERVATION WEEK." CHANGED TO "WE NEED TO FIND OUT WHICH WEEK IN MAY IS PRESERVATION WEEK." ALSO ON PAGE 2, PARAGRAPH 5 - "PLAGUED" CORRECTED TO "PLAQUED." A MOTION WAS MADE BY CAROL JEAN SMITH TO ACCEPT THE MINUTES. MARIA ARZA SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED. GREG LOFGREN REPORTED THE BALANCE IN THE LANDMARK COMMISSION BUDGET IS $18, 029.89. NO TRANSACTIONS WERE REPORTED. LORI WILHELM MOVED THE TREASURER'S REPORT BE ACCEPTED. BARB BYRON SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED. NANCY FIKE INTRODUCED PAM ALTHOFF AND THE TOPIC OF PLAQUING THE PETERSEN PROPERTY AT 4112 MCCULLOM LAKE RD. THE CITY OF MCHENRY HAS APPLIED FOR A GRANT TO PURCHASE THE PETERSEN PROPERTY. THE PAPERWORK MUST BE IN BY JUNE 1, 1998. IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THIS PARTICULAR TYPE OF GRANT THE PROPERTY MUST HAVE HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE. THE CITY WILL SUBMIT A PLAQUE APPLICATION. THE CITY IS ASKING THE COMMISSION TO ACT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. A TIME WILL BE SET FOR THE COMMISSION MEMBERS TO VIEW THE PROPERTY BEFORE THE MAY 5, 1998 MEETING. A GENERAL DISCUSSION CONCERNED THE PLAQUING PROCESS, THE CITY'S INTEREST IN THE GRANT, THE GRANT PROCESS, AND THE STILL PENDING PRESERVATION ORDINANCE. PAM ALTHOFF BROUGHT IN A BOX OF PICTURES WHICH HAD ARRIVED AT CITY HALL. THE COMMISSION WILL LOOK OVER THESE PHOTOGRAPHS. NANCY FIKE DISCUSSED THE STATUS OF THE PRESERVATION ORDINANCE. SHE SUGGESTED THE MEMBERS TAKE TURNS SPEAKING DURING THE PUBLIC COMMENT TIME AT CITY COUNCIL MEETINGS ASKING THEM TO PASS THE PRESERVATION ORDINANCE. HANK NELL REPORTED THAT NO FACADE WORK HAS STARTED ON THE PROPERTY AT 1228 N. GREEN STREET. THE APPLICANT HAS STATED SHE IS STILL INTERESTED IN THE GRANT. NANCY FIKE HAD CONTACT FROM ONE OF THE CITY INSPECTORS. HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT IMPROVEMENTS ON SOME BUILDINGS. HE WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT FACADE IMPROVEMENT GRANTS FOR SIGNS. NANCY FIKE MAY TRY TO INVITE HIM TO A MEETING. CHAIRPERSON FIKE INTRODUCED DISCUSSION CONCERNING A PHOTO DISPLAY FOR CITY HALL SHOWCASING THE PLAQUED BUILDINGS. THE COMMISSION WILL GO AHEAD WITH THIS PROJECT. CAROL JEAN SMITH WILL TAKE SOME PICTURES TO FINISH UP THE COLLECTION. NANCY FIKE WILL WRITE TEXT FOR EACH PHOTOGRAPH. ANN AND GREG WILL TYPE THE TEXT FOR EACH. LORI WILHELM, BOB NOVAK, AND ANN WEST WILL WORK ON THE DISPLAY. GREG LOFGREN WILL WORK ON PUBLICITY FOR THE NEWSLETTER AND THE NEWSPAPER. GREG LOFGREN INFORMED THE COMMISSION THAT THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WILL GIVE THE COMMISSION A HALF PAGE IN THE FIESTA WEEK BOOKLET TO ADVERTISE THE COMMISSION'S WALKING TOURS. THE MAIN STREET TOURS WILL BE ON SATURDAY, JULY 11, 1998 AND WEDNESDAY, JULY 15, 1998. GREG LOFGREN WILL LEAD THE SATURDAY TOUR AND BARB BYRON WILL LEAD THE WEDNESDAY TOUR. THE RIVERSIDE DRIVE TOURS WILL BE ON THE SAME DATES. NANCY FIKE WILL LEAD THE SATURDAY TOUR. THE COMMISSION STILL NEEDS SOMEONE TO DO THE WEDNESDAY, JULY 15TH TOUR. THE COMMISSION WILL VIEW THE KNOX PROPERTY AT 8:00AM ON APRIL 18, 1998. NANCY FIKE ASKED IF ANYONE KNEW THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE SESQUICENTENNIAL QUILT. IT SHOULD BE FOUND AND POSSIBLY BE ENCAPSULATED. LORI WILHELM MOVED FOR ADJOURNMENT AT 8:34PM. BARB BYRON SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED.
