THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING
MINUTES
APRIL 1, 1997
THE MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:15 PM BY CHAIRMAN NANCY FIKE.
NO GUESTS WERE PRESENT. MEMBERS PRESENT INCLUDED: MARIA ARZA,
NANCY FIKE, GREG LOFGREN, BOB NOVAK, CHRIS NOVAK, LORI WILHELM, AND
MAURA McCARTHY. NANCY FIKE WELCOMED NEW MEMBER HANK NELL. THOSE
ABSENT INCLUDED: TOM BOLGER, BARB BYRON, DONNABELLE GLOSSON, AND
CAROL JEAN SMITH.
A MOTION WAS MADE BY LORI WILHELM TO ACCEPT THE MINUTES FROM THE
MARCH 4, 1997 MEETING. MARIA ARZA SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION
CARRIED.
GREG LOFGREN REPORTED THAT NO TRANSACTIONS HAD OCCURRED IN THE
COMMISSION BUDGET. THE TOTAL BALANCE STANDS AT $15,768.82. CHRIS
NOVAK MOVED THAT THE TREASURER'S REPORT BE ACCEPTED. LORI WILHELM
SECONDED THE MOTION. THE MOTION CARRIED.
BOB NOVAK REPORTED THAT WORK AT SUE MILLER'S PLACE OF BUSINESS AND
JIM BECKER'S BUILDING WILL START AS THE WEATHER WARMS UP. IT WAS ALSO
REPORTED THAT THE CITY WILL REDO THE NEW SIDEWALKS AS THEY CRACKED
OVER THE WINTER. THE CITY WILL REPLACE GARBAGE CANS AND BENCHES
ALONG RIVERSIDE DRIVE. LORI WILHELM TALKED WITH THE OWNER OF THE
PRINT SHOP ON MAIN STREET WHO IS INTERESTED IN DOING SOME RESTORATION
ON HIS BUILDING. IT WAS MENTIONED THE OLD HOUSE JOURNAL AND THE
McHENRY COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT MAY BE SOURCES FOR
RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION HELP. GREG LOFGREN REPORTED THAT CARL
FREDRICKSON WANTED SOMEONE FROM THE COMMISSION TO SPEAK AT THE
BREAKFAST MEETING OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ON THE TOPIC OF HOW
PRESERVATION WILL HELP THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESSES. GREG WILL CALL MR.
FREDRICKSON AND TELL HIM Tp CONTACT NANCY FIKE.
GREG LOFGREN TURNED IN AN ANNOUNCEMENT TO BE PUBLISHED IN THE
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE FIESTA BOOKLET. THE WALKING TOURS WILL BE ON
JULY 12th AT 10:00AM AND JULY 16th AT 6:00PM. WE WILL LEAVE THE MASS BARN
OPEN HOUSE OFF THIS YEAR AS IT WILL BE PART OF THE McHENRY COUNTY
HISTORICAL SOCIETY TOUR. GREG WILL HAVE A COMMITTEE MEETING NEXT
WEEK TO CONTINUE TO GET THE WALKS ORGANIZED. MAURA McCARTHY WILL
JOIN THIS COMMITTEE.
NANCY FIKE WILL BRING A COPY OF THE LIST OF ALL OF THE PEOPLE ATTENDING
THE COUNTY PRESERVATION NETWORKING MEETING.
GREG LOFGREN REPORTED THAT HE HAS CHANGED THE PICTURES IN THE
LANDMARK SIGNS. HE HAS TRIED TO REPAIR THE GREEN STREET SIGN SO THAT
THE GLASS FRAME HOLDS TIGHTLY. IN THE WARMER WEATHER HE WILL CAULK
THE OPEN SEAMS. GREG PASSED AROUND SOME COPIES OF PICTURES PEOPLE
HAD GIVEN HIM.
NANCY FIKE REPORTED THAT SHE HAS NOT BEEN CONTACTED BY ANY OF THE
CITY COMMITTEES ON A DISCUSSION OF THE PRESERVATION ORDINANCE. IT
WAS REPOR 1'ED TO NANCY THAT DISCUSSION OF THE ORDINANCE WAS TO TAKE
PLACE IN APRIL. NANCY WILL CALL THE CITY AT THE END OF THE WEEK.
NANCY FIKE HAS NO UPDATE ON THE GRANGER HOUSE ON MAIN STREET. THE
OWNERS HAD INDICATED THEY WERE IN NO HURRY.
CHRIS NOVAK MOVED THAT THE COMMISSION FOUND NO HISTORICAL
SIGNIFICANCE IN THE STRUCTURE AT 4811 CRYSTAL LAKE BLACKTOP. HANK
NELL SECONDED THE MOTION. HANK NELL WILL GET BACK TO NANCY FIKE
WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE STRUCTURE. THE MOTION CARRIED.
NANCY FIKE REPOR TED THAT THE SANBORN FIRE MAPS ARE IN THE CITY VAULT.
IF YOU WANT TO LOOK AT THEM YOU WILL HAVE TO ASK AT THE CITY CLERK'S
DESK. PAM ALTHOFF IS CHECKING INTO THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING THESE
MAPS COPIED AND THE COPIES PLACED IN THE McHENRY PUBLIC LIBRARY.
NANCY FIKE MENTIONED THAT IN THE PAST THE COMMISSION HAS WRITTEN A
YEARLY REPORT TO THE CITY DETAILING THE COMMISSION'S
ACCOMPLISHMENTS. NANCY WILL GET THIS ORGANIZED AND SEND IT OUT TO
THE NEW CITY COUNCIL.
THE COMMISSION DOES NEED TO START PLANNING FOR THE SURVEY OF
STRUCTURES IN THE CITY.
NANCY FIKE MENTIONED THAT ON SATURDAY, MAY 3, 1997, AT UNION STATION
IN JOLIET, THERE WILL BE A ONE DAY EDUCATIONAL SEMINAR TITLED "LOCAL
PRESERVATION, BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS" FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION
COMMISSION MEMBERS. NANCY ENCOURAGED MEMBERS OF OUR COMMISSION
TO ATTEND.
MARIA ARZA MADE A MOTION FOR ADJOURNMENT AT 8:06PM. CHRIS NOVAK
SECONDED, THE MOTION CARRIED.
