OCTOBER 1, 1996
THE LANDMARK COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT
7:20 PM BY CHAIRMAN NANCY FIKE. JEFF JOLITZ AND DON PURN OF ALGONQUIN
HISTORIC COMMISSION WERE PRESENT AS GUESTS. MEMBERS PRESENT
INCLUDED: TOM BOLGER,NANCY FIKE, GREG LOFGREN, LORI WILHELM, CHRIS
NOVAK, BOB NOVAK. MEMBERS ABSENT WERE: BARB BYRON, DONNABELLE
GLOSSON, CAROL JEAN SMITH, AND MARIA ARZA.
CHAIRMAN FIKE INTRODUCED JEFF JOLITZ AND DON PURN OF THE ALGONQUIN
HISTORIC COMMISSION. THEIR COMMISSION WAS CREATED TO INCLUDE
HISTORY OF ALGONQUIN IN ALGONQUIN'S COMPREHENSIVE PLAN. THEY GAVE
AN OVERVIEW OF THE ALGONQUIN AREA. THEIR COMMISSION HAS BEEN ACTIVE
PUBLISHING A BOOK, PRODUCING A SLIDE SHOW, AND TALKING TO DIFFERENT
LOCAL GROUPS. JEFF JOLITZ AND DON PURN TALKED ABOUT THEIR
ARCHITECTURAL SURVEY. THEY EXPLAINED THE SURVEY WORK THAT THEY
DID. (BADGES, EXPLANATION LETTER TO ALL RESIDENTS, SURVEY GROUPS,
TERMINOLOGY SHEET, COMPUTER CAMERA, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE BUILDINGS,
OUTBUILDINGS, SURVEY SHEET, COMPUTER MAPS, TAX RECORDS,HISTORIC
SURVEY.) THE COMMISSION THANKED JEFF JOLITZ AND DON PURN FOR THEIR
INTERESTING PRESENTATION.
LORI WILHELM MOVED THAT THE SEPTEMBER MINUTES BE APPROVED,BOB
NOVAK SECONDED, AND THE MOTION CARRIED.
GREG LOFGREN REVIEWED THE TREASURER'S REPORT. EXPENSES INCLUDED
$106.31 FOR LIGHT IMPRESSIONS, $7.74 FOR BAT OFFICE BINDERS, $48.57 FOR
LANDMARK SIGN REPAIR FROM ACE HARDWARE. NANCY FIKE REPORTED THAT
THE MONEY FROM THE SALE OF THE SESQUICENTENNIAL BOOK DOES GO TO THE
LANDMARK COMMISSION. GREG LOFGREN SUBMITTED A BILL FOR LANDMARK
SIGN REPAIR. THE TOTAL AMOUNT IN THE LANDMARK COMMISSION BUDGET IS
$17,908.19. NANCY FIKE REMINDED THE MEMBERS A PURCHASE ORDER FROM
THE CITY MUST BE OBTAINED BEFORE THE ACTUAL PURCHASE. CHRIS NOVAK
MOVED THAT THE TREASURE'S REPORT BE APPROVED, BOB NOVAK SECONDED,
THE MOTION CARRIED.
LORI WILHELM MOVED THAT A RECOGNITION LETTER BE SENT TO THE OWNERS
OF THE PROPERTY AT 3809 W. JOHN STREET, TOM BOLGER SECONDED. NANCY
FIKE REVIEWED THE WORK THAT HAD BEEN DONE TO MAKE THE PROPERTY
LOOK NICE. THE MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. NANCY FIKE WILL CONTACT
CAROL JEAN SMITH TO WRITE UP THE RECOGNITION LETTER AND GET IT TO LORI
WILHELM FOR GRAPHIC WORK.
GREG LOFGREN REPORTED ON THE OCTOBER 19, 1996 WALKING TOURS. THE
WEST MCHENRY TOUR WILL LEAVE FROM LANDMARK SCHOOL AT 10:00 AM AND
THE RIVERSIDE DRIVE-GREEN STREET TOUR WILL LEAVE FROM THE GAZEBO AT
VETERAN'S MEMORIAL PARK AT 10:00 AM. GREG LOFGREN WILL TAKE CARE OF
PUBLICITY. THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON TOURS IS CONSIDERING OTHER TYPES OF
TOURS SUCH AS CEMETERY TOUR, OPEN HOUSE, AND CENTER STREET-KANE
AVE. AREA.
CHRIS AND BOB NOVAK REPORTED ON DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION. MANY
OWNERS HAVE ALREADY STARTED IMPROVEMENTS OR HAVE PLANS IN THE
WORKS. THEY HAVE BEEN ADVISED THAT THE LANDMARK COMMISSION IS
AVAILABLE TO ASSIST.
NANCY FIKE REPORTED ON ATTENDANCE AT THE BUILDING AND ZONING
MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 16, 1996. THE ALDERMAN'S CONCERNS CENTERED
AROUND: LABELING THE LANDMARK, THAT IT SHOULD QUALIFY IN MORE THAN
ONE AREA,PROCESS BEING TOO LONG,AND NOMINATION PROCESS. NANCY FIKE
AND GREG LOFGREN'S OPINION OF THE MEETING SEEMED TO BE FAVORABLE.
GREG LOFGREN REPORTED THAT HE HAD SUBMITTED AN ARTICLE ON
LANDMARK COMMISSION ACTIVITIES FOR THE OCTOBER ISSUE OF THE CITY
NEWSLETTER.
LORI WILHELM MOVED THAT WE RENEW THE COMMISSION'S MEMBERSHIP IN
THE MCHENRY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY. TOM BOLGER SECONDED. THE
MOTION CARRIED.
NANCY FIKE REPORTED THAT WE RECEIVED AN APPLICATION FOR A FACADE
IMPROVEMENT GRANT FROM SUE MILLER OF JOAN'BARGAIN RESALE SHOP. WE
WILL INVITE HER TO THE NOVEMBER MEETING.
GREG LOFGREN WILL START LOCAL HISTORY CURRICULUM IN JANUARY.
LORI WILHELM REPORTED ON HER INVESTIGATION OF THE LIBRARY AS A
REPOSITORY FOR OUR ARTIFACTS. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO GUARANTEE FOR
SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE ARTIFACTS. THE COMMISSION WILL CONTINUE
TO INVESTIGATE THIS IDEA AT FUTURE MEETINGS.
NANCY FIKE TALKED ABOUT THE SLIDE SHOW. SHE HAS PART OF THE
NARRATION DONE. LORI WILHELM SHOWED HER CHANGED TITLE WORK FOR
THE OPENING SLIDE. OTHER SUGGESTIONS WERE OFFERED,POSSIBLY A SECOND
TITLE SLIDE INDICATING THE AREA BEING SHOWCASED.
CHRIS NOVAK MOVED FOR ADJOURNMENT AT 8:54 PM, TOM BOLGER SECONDED,
AND THE MOTION CARRIED.
