THE LANDMARK COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER AT
7:18PM BY CHAIRMAN NANCY FIKE. NO GUESTS WERE PRESENT. ROLLCALL WAS
TAKEN WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT: MARIA ARZA, NANCY FIKE,
DONNABELLE GLOSSON, GREG LOFGREN,BOB NOVAK, CHRIS NOVAK, AND LORI
WILHELM. MEMBERS ABSENT WERE: BARB BYRON, CAROL JEAN SMITH.
LORI WILHELM MOVED THAT THE AUGUST MINUTES BE APPROVED, MARIA ARZA
SECONDED. NANCY FIKE ASKED THAT THE SPELLING OF "CURRAN" ON PAGE
THREE BE CORRECTED TO READ "PURN." THE MINUTES WERE THEN APPROVED.
DONNABELLE GLOSSON MOVED THAT THE TREASURER'S REPORT BE APPROVED,
LORI WILHELM SECONDED. NANCY FIKE REPORTED THAT A TOTAL OF $18,070.81
WAS AVAILABLE FOR IMPROVEMENTS. FUTURE BILLS COMING IN WILL BE FOR
$134.00 FOR ARCHIVAL QUALITY NOTEBOOKS AND ACID FREE HOLDERS, SOME
EXPENSES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF THE SLIDE SHOW, AND MEMBERSHIP DUES
FOR THE MCHENRY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY. GREG LOFGREN SUBMITTED
A BILL OF $53.97 FOR REPAIR OF LANDMARK SIGNS. GREG ALSO QUESTIONED THE
$3.00 FOR SALE OF SESQUICENTENNIAL BOOKS ON PAGE THREE OF THE BUDGET.
NANCY WILL CHECK ON THIS ITEM. THE MOTION CARRIED.
GREG LOFGREN WILL CHAIR THE COMMITTEE ON WALKING TOURS AT LORI
WILHELM'S HOME ON SEPTEMBER 10 AT 7:00PM.
NANCY FIKE ASKED HAT WE GO TO THE RECOGNITION SECTION OF THE
AGENDA. DONNALE GLOSSON REPORTED ON THE HOUSE AT 3809 W. JOHN
STREET. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO FUTURE PLANS TO REMODEL ANY PARTS OF
THE HOUSE. NANCY FIKE ASKED THAT ALL MEMBERS LOOK AT THE HOUSE
AGAIN BEFORE THE OCTOBER MEETING AND BE PREPARED TO VOTE ON A
RECOGNITION OR NOT.
NANCY FIKE ASKED FOR VOLUNTEERS FOR TREASURER. GREG WILL TAKE ON
THE ROLE OF TREASURER.
NANCY FIKE BEGAN THE DISCUSSION ON THE STATUS OF THE PRESERVATION
ORDINANCE. NANCY FIKE TALKED TO PAM ALTHOFF AND SOME OF US WILL
ATTEND THE BUILDING AND ZONING MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 16, 1996 AT 7:30PM
TO DISCUSS THE ORDINANCE. NANCY FIKE HAS ALSO SENT A LETTER ABOUT
OUR ORDINANCE AND A COPY OF THE ORDINANCE TO THE OTHER CITY
COMMISSIONS ASKING FOR THEIR QUESTIONS AND INPUT.
NANCY FIKE TALKED TO ADELE FROELICH AND ADELE IS WILLING TO KEEP UP
THE LANDMARK COMMISSION SCRAPBOOK.
•-- CHAIRMAN FIKE UPDATED THE COMMISSION ON THE PHALIN HOUSE ON RT. 31.
THERE HAS BEEN NO MOVEMENT FOR DEMOLITION SINCE THE REQUEST. NANCY
HAS TALKED TO JIM ALTHOFF FOR SOME POSSIBLE ADVICE ON CREATING
INTEREST IN PRESERVING PROPERTY. DISCUSSION FOLLOWED ON THE AMOUNT
OF HISTORY WE HAVE ON THE HOUSE, MOVING THE HOUSE, GOING IN TO
DOCUMENT THE HOUSE, OR SAVING ARCHITECTURAL PIECES OF THE HOUSE.
THE STATEMENT WAS MADE THAT THERE IS A BETTER CHANCE FOR
PRESERVATION IN AREAS WHERE LAND VALUES ARE NOT HIGH.
NANCY FIKE BROUGHT UP THE FACT THAT THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING
INFORMATION TO PAM ALTHOFF FOR THE CITY NEWSLETTER IS SEPTEMBER 11,
1996. GREG LOFGREN WILL SUBMIT SOMETHING ON LANDMARK SIGNS.
NANCY FIKE TALKED WITH DEBBIE HARR FROM THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
AND THE SLIDE SHOW WILL BE READY FOR OCTOBER. LORI WILHELM REPORTED
ON HER GRAPHICS WORK FOR THE PROGRAM. NANCY FIKE REPORTED ON THE
FORMAT AND NARRATION FOR THE PROGRAM.
NANCY FIKE REPORTED ON THE PROGRESS OF MEETINGS BETWEEN OTHER
LOCAL PRESERVATION GROUPS. SHE AND GLORIA MACK OF THE MCHENRY
COUNTY HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION FEEL TWO MEETINGS PER YEAR
WOULD BE SUFFICIENT TO KEEP COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE GROUPS.
NANCY FIKE SUGGESTED WE TAKE TURNS ATTENDING THESE MEETINGS, AND
THAT THE DIFFERENT COMMISSIONS WOULD TAKE TURNS HOSTING THE
MEETINGS. THE FIRST MEETING WOULD PROBABLY BE AFTER JANUARY OF 1997.
NANCY FIKE ASKED GREG LOFGREN IF HE WOULD BEGIN TO WORK ON A NEEDS
ASSESSMENT FOR LOCAL HISTORY IN THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM.
LORI WILHELM MOVED THAT THE LANDMARK COMMISSION INFORM THE
BUILDING AND ZONING COMMITTEE THAT THERE IS LITTLE HISTORIC
SIGNIFICANCE LEFT IN THE BUILDING AT 4305 W. ELM AND THAT THE
COMMISSION APPROVES DEMOLITION. DONNABELLE GLOSSON SECONDED THE
MOTION. DISCUSSION FOCUSED ON FORMER PROPERTY OWNERS AND THE FACT
THAT THE BUILDING HAS BEEN EXTENSIVELY REMODELED AND MOVED OFF ITS
ORIGINAL FOUNDATION. DONNABELLE GLOSSON BROUGHT UP THE IDEA OF
INSPECTION TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANYTHING TO DOCUMENT OR POSSIBLY SAVE.
THE MOTION WAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED.
NANCY FIKE BROUGHT OUT A NUMBER OF ARTIFACTS THAT HAVE BEEN GIVEN
TO THE COMMISSION. AT FUTURE MEETINGS WE NEED TO ADDRESS A POLICY
CONCERNING WHAT TO DO WITH ITEMS DONATED TO THE LANDMARK
COMMISSION.
BOB NOVAK REPORTED THAT MORE BUSINESSES ON RIVERSIDE DRIVE ARE
BECOMING INTERESTED IN FIXING UP THEIR PROPERTIES. THE FEELING IS THAT
SOME INFORMATION ON PROPERLY CHANGING THESE BUILDINGS NEEDS TO GET
TO SOME OF THESE OWNERS. BOB NOVAK ALSO DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY OF
A RIVERWALK. CHRIS NOVAK SUGGESTED PRINTING A LIST OF PEOPLE WHO CAN
GIVE HISTORIC PRESERVATION ADVICE TO OWNERS PLANNING TO REMODEL.
CHRIS NOVAK SAID HE WOULD HAND DELIVER THESE.
DONNABELLE GLOSSON MADE A MOTION TO ADJOURN AT 8:55PM, MARIA ARZA
SECONDED THE MOTION, AND THE MOTION CARRIED.
