THE LANDMARK COMMISSION REGULAR AUGUST MEETING WAS CALLED TO
ORDER AT 7:17 PM BY CHAIRMAN NANCY FIKE. NO GUESTS WERE PRESENT.
ROLL CALL WAS TAKEN WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT: TOM
BOLGER,NANCY FIKE, DONNABELLE GLOSSON,GREG LOFGREN,LORI WILHELM.
NEW MEMBERS PRESENT WERE: MARIA ARZA,CHRIS NOVAK,AND BOB NOVAK.
MEMBERS ABSENT INCLUDED: BARB BYRON,AND CAROL JEAN SMITH.
LORI WILHELM MOVED THAT THE JULY MINUTES BE APPROVED,DONNABELLE
GLOSSON SECONDED. TOM BOLGER QUESTIONED THE PROGRESS OF THE OSCO
FILM PROCESSING PROBLEM. NANCY REPORTED THAT PAM ALTHOFF WAS GOING
TO WRITE A LETTER FROM THE CITY. THERE WAS NO FURTHER NEWS. THE
MOTION CARRIED.
THERE WAS NO TREASURER'S REPORT AS NONE WAS INCLUDED IN THE PACKET.
NANCY FIKE EDUCATED THE MEMBERS ON OUR LANDMARK SIGNS. SHE
THANKED CAROL JEAN SMITH AND GREG LOFGREN FOR CHANGING THE SIGNS.
GREG LOFGREN WILL CONTINUE TO STAY ON THE SIGN COMMITTEE. HE TALKED
ABOUT THE REPAIR OF THE SIGNS,REPLACING THE CORK BOARD AND HANGING
THE ENGRAVED PLATES. LORI WILHELM BROUGHT UP THE IDEA CHANGING THE
SIGNS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ISSUANCE OF THE OF THE CITY NEWSLETTER.
GREG WILL CHECK WITH PAM ALTHOFF ON DATES OF THE NEWSLETTER. BOB
NOVAK BROUGHT UP THE FACT THAT THE HOTEL OWNER VOLUNTEERED TO
BUILD A PLANTER AROUND THE RIVERSIDE DRIVE SIGN. BOB NOVAK HAS
VOLUNTEERED TO TAKE CARE OF THE PLANTS. BOB ALSO BROUGHT UP USING
COLOR BACKGROUND IN THE SIGNS,POSSIBLY CHANGING WITH THE SEASONS.
TOM BOLGER MOVED THAT UP TO $100.00 CAN BE SPENT FOR SIGN REPAIRS. LORI
WILHELM SECONDED, THE MOTION CARRIED.
NANCY FIKE THANKED GREG LOFGREN, LORI WILHELM, AND BARB GILPIN FOR
DOING THE WALKING TOURS IN JULY. GREG AND LORI REPORTED ON THEIR
TOURS. NANCY REPORTED ON HER SATURDAY MORNING RIVERSIDE DRIVE
TOUR. NANCY ASKED FOR A CONTINUING COMMITTEE TO WORK ON WALKING
TOURS. GREG LOFGREN WILL CHAIR THIS COMMITTEE WITH MEMBERS LORI
WILHELM, MARIA ARZA, AND CHRIS NOVAK.
CHAIRMAN FIKE RECOGNIZED TOM BOLGER FOR HIS HONOR AS PARADE
MARSHALL DURING FIESTA DAYS. HE REPORTED THAT HE HAD A GOOD TIME.
NANCY FIKE REPORTED ON THE STATUS OF RECOGNITION AWARDS. CAROL JEAN
SMITH HAS NOT HAD ANY RESPONSE FROM THE PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE AT THE
SOUTHWEST CORNER OF WASHINGTON AND GREEN STREETS. NANCY TALKED
ABOUT THE WORTHINESS OF THE HOUSE AT 3809 W. JOHN ST. FOR RECOGNITION.
DISCUSSION CONTINUED, TOM BOLGER MOVED THAT THE RECOGNITION BE
TABLED UNTIL DONNABELLE GLOSSON HAS MORE CONTACT WITH THE OWNER.
GREG LOFGREN SECONDED, ALL APPROVED.
CHAIRMAN FIKE MOVED TO THE ELECTION PORTION OF THE AGENDA. NANCY
WILL CONTINUE AS CHAIRMAN. TOM BOLGER NOMINATED LORI WILHELM FOR
VICE-CHAIRMAN,DONNABELLE GLOSSON SECONDED, LORI ACCEPTED,ALL WERE
IN FAVOR. TOM NOMINATED GREG LOFGREN FOR SECRETARY,MARIA ARZA
SECONDED, ALL WERE IN FAVOR. CAROL JEAN SMITH WILL CONTINUE AS
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY.
NANCY FIKE INFORMED THE COMMISSION THAT A LETTER OF APPROVAL FOR A
FACADE IMPROVEMENT GRANT HAS BEEN SENT TO MR. MILLER CO-OWNER OF
THE BUILDING AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF PEARL ST. AND RIVERSIDE DRIVE.
NANCY FIKE WILL CALL ADELE FROELICH AND ASK IF SHE WOULD BE
INTERESTED IN CONTINUING TO KEEP UP THE LANDMARK COMMISSION
SCRAPBOOK.
BOB NOVAK REPORTED ON CONTINUED DISCUSSION AND PLANNING FOR
RIVERSIDE DR. IMPROVEMENTS. HE REPORTED THE MERCHANT'S PLEASURE
WITH CITY OFFICIALS AND THEIR CONTINUED INTEREST IN RIVERSIDE DR.
IMPROVEMENTS.
NANCY FIKE BEGAN PRESENTING THE PRESERVATION ORDINANCE FOR THE CITY
OF MCHENRY. SHE NOTED THAT THE 1983 CITY COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
INCLUDED SOLID HISTORICAL REFERENCES TO HISTORICAL PRESERVATION. THE
1990 COMPREHENSIVE PLAN HAS TAKEN OUT ALL REFERENCES TO HISTORIC
PRESERVATION. NANCY DISCUSSED THE SUMMARY WHICH SHE WROTE
EXPLAINING THE PRESERVATION ORDINANCE WHICH WILL BE PRESENTED FOR
HOPEFUL PASSAGE BY THE CITY COUNCIL. GREG LOFGREN MOVED THAT THE
PRESERVATION ORDINANCE BE PASSED AS WRITTEN, CHRIS NOVAK SECONDED,
AND IT WAS APPROVED UNANIMOUSLY. NANCY WILL SEND COPIES OF THE
ORDINANCE WITH A COVER LETTER TO ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS. NANCY WILL
DISCUSS THE PROPOSED ORDINANCE WITH THE CITY MANAGER.
NANCY FIKE WILL CHAIR A SUBCOMMITTEE WITH MEMBERS LORI WILHELM AND
CAROL JEAN SMITH TO PREPARE A TWENTY MINUTE SLIDE PRESENTATION ON
THE THREE BUSINESS DISTRICTS OF MCHENRY.
GREG LOFGREN MOVED AND MARIA ARZA SECONDED A MOTION TO PAY $65.00
FOR THE COMMISSIONS CONTINUED MEMBERSHIP IN IAHPC/LPCI. THE MOTION
CARRIED.
LORI WILHELM BROUGHT UP HOW NICE THE PERRY HOUSE IS LOOKING SINCE IT
HAS BEEN PAINTED. FUTURE PLANS SHOULD INCLUDE POSSIBLE PLAQUING OR
RECOGNITION.
NANCY FIKE PRESENTED INFORMATION ON THE WONDERFUL WORK DON
CURRAN HAS DONE ON COMPUTER GENERATED MAPS OF ALGONQUIN. THIS IS
SOMETHING WE SHOULD LOOK AT IN THE FUTURE.
NANCY FIKE TALKED ABOUT THE UNIQUE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY PREFAB
GARAGE IN RINGWOOD. SHE COMMENTED THAT THERE ARE MANY UNUSUAL
TREASURES TUCKED AWAY IN OUR COMMUNITIES.
BOB NOVAK BROUGHT UP THE CONCERN OF TREE REMOVAL ALONG THE SOUTH
SIDE OF MCCULLOM LAKE RD. EAST OF TARGET,AND IF THE LANDMARK
COMMISSION SHOULD WRITE A LETTER TO EXPRESS OUR CONCERN. NANCY PIKE
STRESSED THAT A PLANNING DEPARTMENT WITH SET GUIDELINES WOULD HELP
ELIMINATE SOME OF THESE PROBLEMS.
LORI WILHELM MOVED FOR ADJOURNMENT AT 8:24 PM, IT WAS SECONDED BY
.CHRIS NOVAK, AND ALL VOTED IN FAVOR OF THE MOTION.
