HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 3/6/1996 - Landmark Commission THE CITY OF M HENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION MEETING March 6, 1996 In the absence of the chairman and vice-chairman, Secretary Nancy Fike called the meeting to order at 7:19p.m. No guest were present and roll was taken with the following members present: Nancy Fike, Adele Froelich, Larry Huck, Debbie Lane, Carol Jean Smith and Lori Wilhelm. There were not enough members present for a forum therefore the minutes fram the previous meeting and the treasurer's report could not be approved. When the treasurer's report was brought up, Carol Jean Smith asked about the upcoming Illinois State Historic Preservation Conference (Oak Park) June 6th through the 8th. Both Carol Jean and Lori Wilhelm expressed an interest in attending. Under Committee Reports, Lori Wilhelm and Nancy Fike gave a summary of the Downtown Revitalization Meeting held February 15, 1996 at the McHenry Chanter office. The minutes were sent to those attending. The Landmark Commissions was well represented by the following members: Barb Gilpin, Marya Weber, Tam Bolger, Nancy Fike, Lori Wilhelm. Both Lori and Nancy felt that the meeting ended very open ended with no indication that further unified action would be taken. It was also felt that the City (as represented by one of the aldermen) believed the Landmark Commission would take a leading role in the downtown revitalization plans (there are no plans as yet other than efforts fram Riverside Drive merchants for lights and street improvements. In further discussion Carol Jean will contact likely participants fran Main Street and Green Street and put them in contact with Bob Novak from Riverside Drive. Much more of a plan needs to be developed. Along with this discussion it was decided that Carol Jean would send copies of our facade improvement grant info. to the owner of the old Justen building on the nw corner of Elm and Park and the the owners of Steiny's Tavern (sp.?). As to the Northwest Herald Column, Adele Froelich reported that the Northwest Herald offered little positive feedback an a regular column fram the Commission. Adele may try theTribune or try a flier that might be distributed to local restaurants for them to have copies made that carry local history and preservation info. on the city. Nancy Fike will send a sample copy to Adele. Under old business, Nancy Fike reported that Larry Huck, Greg Lofgren and she had met for the final time an the preservation ordinance (a copy of which was included in the packet). The Committee decided to attend the March 12th meeting of the County Preservation Commission and ask for their suggestions an which if any parts of their ordinance had caused any problems. Following that meeting, a member of their Commission would be invited to the Landmark Commission, perhaps in April to discuss the ordinance. No discussion took place on the remainder of the McHenry ordinance proposal as no quorum existed. Continuing under old business, Carol Jean reported that she had had an informal request for information an the Backus house by Tim Adams. Tim and his wife might be interested in the house, even moving it. They simply wanted information at this time.k Under New Business, Nancy Fike brought up a suggestion for the Commission's participation in Fiesta Days. Instead of a booth at Art in the Park, the Commission might offer walking tours of the older parts of town/business districts. Perhaps an early morning or breakfast tour, midday and/or dusk. If we decided early enough, it could be placed in the Fiesta Days Brochure. Local restaurants might get involved by giving a percentage off a meal for those who take the walk. Either do both weekends of the Fiesta Days activities or on sidewalk sale day. Another suggestion came up fran Carol Jean to decorate store windows with local family and/or history materials for preservation days in June. All this should be rediscussed at the April meeting. Considering we had no quorum, it was mutually decided to end the meeting at 8:22 p.m. Respectfully submitted, -72491/ Nancy J. F e
