The December meeting began at 7:25 with a showing of the McHenry State
Bank video highlighting McHenry's positive features. The original
target market for the production was to people thinking of relocating
in McHenry. Tan Bolger also noted that the $8.00 video would make a
unique gift. Mr. Bolger offered to donate a copy of the video to the
Landmark Commission and the McHenry County Historical Society.
Following the presentation Chairman Gilpin called the meeting to order
and roll was taken. All present. The minutes were approved as sent
on a motion by Adele Froelich and a second by Lori Wilhelm. Treasurer
Debbie Lane presented the treasurer's report and noted that no
expenditures had been made since August. The Landmark budget contains
an overall total amount for improvements of $15,208.87. Barb Byron
moved to accept the Treasurer's report and Donnabelle Glosson
seconded. Motion passed.
Under Committee Reports: A. Downtown Revitalization. Due to the
Christmas Holiday nothing was presented. B. The Backhaus Project.
No preliminary plats are yet available. Barb Byron asked for a survey
of the property. C. Northwest Herald Column. Chairman Gilpin
reported that Adele Froelich now had pictures and would begin writing
articles on behalf of the Commission for the Herald. D. Files
Reorganization. No work completed. E. Landmark Sign Pictures. Greg
Lofgren stated that work would begin in the spring with better
weather. At this point, Barb Byron reported that the Landmark School
special marble plaque was losing its wood frame. Chairman Gilpin will
contact Dr. Dodds fran District 15 as that plaque was a creation of
the District. Mrs. Gilpin also noted that Tan Bolger had received a
letter about what other cities did with historic buildings and fire
and building codes. Specifically, there was a letter fran Dave Weide,
a former Johnsburg resident now the Building Enforcement Officer for
Galena. While there was no specific 'category for old buildings and
fire codes, they were looking into the matter. Mr. Weide has an
historic preservation background and would be willing to talk to the
Landmark Commission. It was decided to invite him sometime this
spring. F. The Preservation Ordinance. Copies of Article III of the
proposed ordinance were handed out to the members for discussion at
the January, 1996 meeting. Owner notification but not owner consent
was pointed out as recommended for all preservation ordinances. The
county ordinance and the proposed Woodstock ordinance are both written
that way.
Under Old Business: Marya Dixon reported that the Plan Commission had
discussed the Landmark Commission recent correspondence on suggested
local landmarks. Debbie Lane reported that the City has had no
official communication from Ron Bycowski on improvements to his
building at the sw corner of Pearl and Riverside Drive. Carol Jean
Smith attended the Edgebrook Open House and commended their addition.
On a motion by Marya Dixon with a second by Barb Bryon, Carol Jean
will write letters of support to Dist. 15, the Library Board and Mel
Prust of the McHenry State Bank for their open houses and video
production.
Under New Business: Nancy Fike invited the Commission to attend the
December 9th plaguing of the Holcomb School by the County Preservation
Commission and the Historical Society. In addition she requested
information on the history of the Riverside-Bake Shp which Larry Huck
then provided ( circa late 1920's or early 1930's). The first baker
being William Teuckler a Chicagoan who was also a bike racer as well
as a baker.
At 8:05 Adele Froelich moved for adjournment and Dennabelle Glosson
seconded. With a round of Merry Christmases, the meeting ended.
