THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION
MARCH 1 , 1994
The regular meeting of the McHenry Landmark Commission was brought
to order at 7:24 p.m. at the McHenry Municipal Center. Members
present were: Marya Dixon, Adele Froehlich, Carl Fredrickson, Ruth
Fenwick, Barb Byron, Carol Jean Smith, Lori Wilhelm, and Donnabelle
Doherty. We welcomed Debbie Lane our new member. Tom Bolger and
Larry Huck were absent.
MINUTES
ThiFi-;iere no corrections or changes to the minutes of the February
1 , 1994 meeting.
PLAQUE PROGRAM
`.- The new revision of the City of McHenry Landmark Plaque Program was
distributed to the members. We read through the copies and made the
necessary changes and corrections. Carol Jean has put many hours
into this project and we thank her for it.
The Northwestern Hotel on Main Street has been sold to Dick
Buchert. He wants to rename it the Riverside West Hotel . He is
doing some remolding to the building's front windows. The
Commission members are very upset over this but we can't dictate to
the owners what they can do to their building even if the building
is plagued. The Northwestern Hotel was the first building to be
plagued. The consensus of the members was to take away the plaque.
We must wait and see if he maintains the old favor of the building
before we can vote on removing the plague. The Commission wasn't
notified of this permit to remodel this building. A motion was made
by Lori to write a letter to the Mayor and City Council asking them
why we were appointed to be on a Landmark Commission and why we
aren't notified of the changes going on in the City. Carl asked
Lori to write this letter with copies going to all Department Heads
of the City. We need to go to a City Council meeting to let them
know that we are all volunteers and appointed by the Mayor. We must
work together to keep the historical flavor and history of the City.
FINANCIAL REPORT
We have a $944.22 balance in the City account. These monies must be
` - used by May 1 , 1994 which is the start of the new fiscal year.

DISPLAY BOXES
Donnabelle called the Historical Society and was given the name of
the carpenter who does all the work for the Society. He was going
to look at the boxes on Green, Riverside, and Main Street. He will
call Donnabelle back with his quote. A motion was made by Carol
Jean to give Donnabelle authorization to spend $150.00 per box. If
this is not enough, she is to call Carl for authorization to spend
more. Work on this project must be started by April 15, 1994. Jay
Weber who did the original artwork will be called to give an
estimate to redo and to change the artwork.
MISCELLANEOUS
Carol Jean wrote a letter to Mike Jackson of the Illinois Historical
Preservation Agency. At this time she has not heard from him. We
would like him to come and do a program for us. We are hoping to
get the information to the business and homeowners that there is
assistance for them through the State.
An application was given to Judy Moore of the McHenry Library and
they will go over it at the next board meeting.
The old house support group of Woodstock called Carol Jean and our
April Program was put in their newsletter. Jean has received many
calls about our Commission from other towns and organizations asking
about our Plaguing Program.
Motion by Donnabelle, seconded by Lori , to adjourn at 8:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Marva Dixon
