HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 11/3/1992 - Landmark Commission CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION
November 3, 1992
The regular monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark
Commission was called to order at 7:35 P.M. at the McHenry Municipal
Center. Members present were: Marya Dixon, Donnabelle Doherty,
Adele Froehlich, Jesse Freund, Tom Hopkins, Jean Smith, Lori
Wilhelm, and Phyllis Mueller.
The minutes were amended to read that the demolition permit for the
Hansen - Simon house has not yet been issued. The minutes were
approved as amended.
FINANCIAL REPORT:
Tom reported that $52.00 was realized from the West Side Program.
SIMON - HANSEN HOUSE TOUR: Several members toured the Krause -
Simon House one morning noting that it was in pretty bad shape.
Jean took Rick Batt through the house and said he offered $20.00
each for some of the beams. Tom reported that the Scarborough House
will soon be torn down. Lori asked Tom what the status of our
demolition ordinance was in regards to acceptance by the City
Council . Tom said it was status quo and before we try to do
anything more about it, we should probably wait until some of the
members on the Building committee will be changed after the April
election.
PUBLIC PROGRAM: Jean Smith reported that there was a good turnout
of 75 people. The stories related were really interesting. Among
those invited were Pete Schaefer, Alex Justen, Chuck Miller, Jim
McAndrews and many others including Lorraine Gausden. The Audience
contributed a lot of anecdotes and it all added up to a make fine
program. Adele said it proves people will attend when it's about
McHenry history. Jean said we have enough material to have another
program on the West Side. We will plan a program for next Spring on
East Side stories.
sw
CITY PURCHASE OF PARK PROPERTY: Tom presented the members with a
letter he wrote in behalf of our Commission from the Park Department
stating we are in support of the plan to renovate the old Howard
Equestrian Barn for public use. The members signed it and it will
be mailed.
COMMISSION PLAN: Tom passed out copies of a draft for a Commission
Plan and asked the Commission to read it over. We will discuss it
next month.
Jean Smith suggested we establish some work nights in addition
to our regular meeting. These meetings will be to organize our
historic materials (photos, maps etc. ) and to help Donnabelle and
Jesse finish their survey of McHenry buildings. We all agreed.
Discussion was held on the problem of frequent non-attendance
of some of our members. Phyllis suggested we establish a rule
stating that any member missing 3 consecutive meetings for other
than health reasons should be eliminated from the Commission. We
should let the City Council know that we would like to establish
this rule.
Jean related that the Star Newspaper is interested once again
in covering our activities.
Tom pointed out that #7 on our Commission Plan Draft, relating
to activities of the County Commission, and other local Landmark
commissions was important. He said he feels we should make an
effort to attend some of these events. Also he would like to see us
attend the State and National conferences.
Adele requested material from Donnabelle and Jesse on business
histories that might make good articles for the newspaper. Jesse
said he did have some good stories for her.
Motion to adjourn at 8:40 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
Lori Wilhem, Secretary.
