THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION
MARCH 3, 1992
The regular meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission was brought to
order at 7:35 p.m. at the McHenry Municipal Center. Members present were:
Marya Dixon, Donnabelle Doherty, Adele Froehlich, Jesse Freund, Marlene
Goetschel , Tom Hopkins, Carl Fredrickson, Ruth Fenwick, Barb Byron, Jean
Smith, and Lori Wilhelm.
FINANCIAL REPORT
The report from the City Clerk shows that we had no expenditures in the last
four months. Our records show that we have spent $109.90 which leaves us with
a balance of $2890.10.
UPDATES
Tom reported that we have a temporary Building Officer working 2-3 days a
week. We should contact him to ensure that we are notified of any demolition
``- permits. Tom reported that the Simon House is approximately 137 years old.
Catherine Simon said she thought it had been moved once to it's present
location. Father Nix owned the house and it was purchased by Herb Simon in
1946. When we have the history finished it will be sent to Tom Bolger as he
requested . Tom said that we need to formulate a plan on how to market the
house. We need an estimate on the cost of moving it. Barb Byron volunteered
to find someone.
DEMOLITON PRESERVATION ORDINANCE
Nothing new.
CONFERENCES
Tom informed the Landmark Commission members that the Conference on Museums
and Historic Structures will be held in Lockport on March 20th from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. The State Conference on Historic Preservation will meet in Peoria
June 4th through the 6th and somebody should go.
Jean stated that there will be a seminar at M.C.C. on McHenry County Geography
on March 7th. The hours are 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There's a $6.00 fee.
TRADE FAIR
The Trade Fair will be held on March 27, 28, and 29th. Jean reported that
Barb Gilpin said there is room for us in the City booth. We need to gather
stuff to show, pictures, and plaque applications, etc. Tom and Jean will set
it up.

FACADE IMPROVEMENT GRANTS
Tom reported that we have a grant application from David S. Byron. The
`- balance in our fund is $339.38 and $8455 is what he needs. Tom read the
criteria for receiving a grant to us before our considering it. Marlene moved
that the Byron application was more for a maintenance project than restoration
and therefore did not meet the criteria and should be refused. Motion was
seconded by Jean and passed with one abstention.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Historic Survey: Donnabelle reported that she will be going out to gather
information from the building owners of new or newer houses so that we have
something on every building in McHenry.
Public Meetings: Carl reported that he has no information on a program of
local interest as yet but he will call Nancy Fike for some suggestions. Jean
Smith suggested that perhaps we could do a program on our plagued homes. This
would take place on a Sunday afternoon at about 2:00 p.m. Jean suggested that
perhaps we could invite the owners of the plagued homes to come and answer
questions. This was accepted by the members and a date of April 26th was
set. This would take place at the City Municipal Center. Jean will put
together a slide presentation of the plagued homes. Barb Byron said she could
provide a now and then map of McHenry for viewing at the program. It was
suggested that we provide some information about the Simon House. Jean
suggested as another idea for a program that we invite citizens to bring in
their old photos of McHenry for a showing and informal talk
Publicity: Adele said the deadline for the next City Newsletter is March
-- 15th. She has an article ready to go in.
Tom reported that there will be an exhibit of old post cards at the Lake
County Museum at the Lakewood Forest Preserve.
Jean said she would arrange a time with Barb Gilpin to view the Knox Park Barn
as a possible site for a future fair. Lori expressed a desire to see it also.
Jesse Freund made a motion to adjourn at 8:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Lori Wilhelm
