Commission was called to order at 7:30 p.m. , August 6, 1991 in the Building and Zoning City Council Chambers. Members present were: Marya Dixon, (815)363-2170 Donnabelle Doherty, Adele Froehlich, Jesse Freund, Tom Hopkins, Parks and David Mohan, Carol Jean Smith, Lori Wilhelm, Barb Byron, Carl Recreation Fredrickson, and Ruth Fenwick. (815)363-2160 Police The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved by (Non-Emergency) unanimous vote. Jesse questioned the joining of the McHenry County (8151 363-2200 Historical Society. It was explained by Tom to his satisfaction. There was no financial report. Mayor FIESTA DAYS BOOTH RESULTS Nft*rilliam.1. Busse Tom reported that the quilt ticket sales amounted to $85.00 for that day and this was considered good. City Clerk Barbara E. Gilpin QUILT RAFFLE Treasurer Jean Smith has agreed to organize the sale of quilt raffle tickets. Lillian Cairns She passed a schedule around to the commission for signing up for times to sell . Jean stated she needs small posters for stores; and Aldermen three signs: one each for the Chamber, the City Clerk's office and WARl,1 the Library. Lori said she would take care of making those. William 1. Bolger Toni Donahue TOUR AND DEMONSTRATIONS WARD2 Lori reported that the progress of the Heritage Tour was not going Gary W. Lieder well and we were far behind with arrangements. She suggested that Terence W. Locke we consider canceling the tour and demonstrations. She suggested WARD 3 that we should concentrate on the sale of raffle tickets and perhaps Raymond Smith realize a very good profit from only that. Dennis L. Adams WARD4 Carl stated that he had lined up two demonstrators. Marya reported Ceciliaserritella she was having a difficult time securing homes for the tour. Barb Randy Patterson was not able to find anyone for a car show. Discussion followed and Donnabelle called for a show of hands in favor of canceling the tour. The vote was unanimously in favor of cancellation. Carl said he would call the demonstrators and inform them. It was decided that the quilt raffle would be our main focus thru September 15th, when the drawing for the quilt would take place on the steps of Landmark School at 2:00 p.m. Page 2 Adele stated that she had two dates set for a TV interview and a radio interview which we will now use to promote our raffle. Tom presented an idea for future consideration; The idea being that we should concentrate our efforts around activities and public programs that would be educational and informative. Tom offered that the only way to change the attitude of the citizens of McHenry is to educate our young people as to the importance and value of preserving our heritage, both historical and architectural . The commission agreed that education is more important than fund raising. Tom asked the commission to be thinking about whether we want to have a home tour sometime in the future. We will discuss the possibilities at our next month's meeting. Tom will have a list of subcommittees for our consideration. DEMOLITION ORDINANCE Tom reported that he found news articles on demolition problems in other communities. He said it supported our thoughts that an ordinance is necessary. Newly appointed member, Ruth Fenwick, stated that she recently learned that Landmark School will soon celebrate it's 100th birthday. It was suggested that the building should be plagued. It was agreed that this should be pursued. General discussion was held on the state of disrepair and overall poor condition of Green Street business district. Jean made a request that anyone knowing of a location we might use to sell our raffle tickets, should please give her a call .
