6 November 1990
The regular monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission
was called to order at 7 : 35 P.M. in the conference room of the McHenry
Area Chamber of Commerce. The change of location due to election day.
Members present were: Nancy Fike, Tom Hopkins, Marya Dixon, Lori
Wilhelm, Adele Froelich, Jesse Freund, Marlene Goetschel, David Mohan,
Don Porter, Jean Smith, and Susan Goldberg. Members absent were:
Frank Gans , and Donna Belle Doherty. There were no guests present.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved by unanimous vote.
Treasurer ' s report was given by Tom Hopkins . Fiscal year-to-date
receipts were $1 , 971 . 95 , disbursements were $784 . 40 . The above amounts
were for May thru September, 1990 . September receipts were $ 1 , 820 . 95 ,
disbursements were $479 . 93 . Nancy retained the City computer printout
for review of receipts and disbursements for the Heritage Fair.
Owen House update by Nancy: the City has a copy of a video tape from
an inspection of the structure. The house is in bad, deteriorating
condition, but is structurally sound according to engineer Ernie Varga.
It ' s a possibility that it may not survive another winter. Per Ann
Swallow of the state office for the National Register, there is a good
chance the house would qualify for register status , but the Owner ' s
consent is required. The Owner had not signed a purchase offer contract
submitted by Perry Moy which could save the structure. Perry Moy' s
proposed site plan has not been reviewed yet by the Commission as was
previously promised.
A check for $1 , 500 was presented to Wayne Steinmetz by Tom Hopkins and
Mayor Busse on Friday, October 26 as the first Facade Improvement Grant.
The presentation was published by the McHenry Star News and Northwest
Herald.
The proposed Demolition ordinance which had been included in the monthly
mailing to Commission members was discussed. Three minor revisions
were sugested: specifying that the secretary of the Committee be a
Landmark Commission member, providing review of all structures applying
for a demolition permit (not just established Historic Structures and
Districts ) , and clarifying that accessory structures as well as main
structures needed to be protected. Jean Smith made a motion, seconded
by Lori Wilhelm to present the proposed ordinance with above revisions
to the City Council Building Committe.
The 1991 annual fund raising event was discussed, as to improvements
that could be made from the 1990 Heritage Fair:
name change to "Country Fair" ; schedule the same date for next year
to insure publication in local event directories ; possibly have
2 separate tours , and include commercial buildings and gardens ;
attempt to obtain help from local service organizations , possibly
assigning different portions of the event to different organizations ;
more early organization is needed, with major planning to be completed
in May; additional attractions such as an antique appraiser, live
radio.
