The regular monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission
was called to order at 7 : 30 P.M. Members present were: Nancy Fike,
Tom Hopkins , Hank Nell , Lori Wilhelm, Adele Froelich, Jessie Freund,
Donna Belle Doherty, Marlene Goetschel , and David Mohan; absent were:
Marya Dixon, Frank Gans , and Don Porter .
Guest present were Liz Nolan, Andy Halek, Sue Cardamonn, and Mayor
Busse. The guests were attending the meeting as voting members of the
Facade Improvement Grant Committe.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved without change.
There was no up to date financial report. Nancy reported spending $90
for black & white photographs to be placed in the business district
markers .
Consideration of applications for the Facade Improvement Grant
proceded. Applications were previously received by the City prior to
the deadline from: 1 ) John Charles for the Tropical Fantasy Pet Shop,
1301 N. Riverside Drive, for new brick on rear exterior facade;
2 ) Wayne Steinmetz for the McHenry Flying Dragons , 1323 N. Riverside
Drive, for exterior improvements to all sides of the building; and
3 ) Ken Richardson for the Millstream Coin Wash, 1304 N. Front Street,
for replacement of front windows and entrance door.
The Commission has a balance of $1 , 896 . 40 from it ' s fund raising
events for providing the grants . The Commission voted at an earlier
meeting to make $1 , 500 . 00 available for grants this year, with the
L... remainder to be retained as seed money for future events .
Including the Commission members and voting quests , 13 persons were
present to judge and vote on the applications received. Each appli-
cation was individually reviewed per the grant criteria, with general
discussion of the applicant qualifications . The following votes were
then taken:
A. As to whether the applications were qualified under the
guidelines :
Tropical Fantasy Pet Shop, 4 yes .
Flying Dragons , 12 yes .
Millstream Coin Wash, 5 yes.
B. On the number of grants to award this year :
Multiple awards , 3
Single award, 12
No award, 1
There was a motion by Marlene Goetschel , second by Hank Nell that a
letter be written to Wayne Steinmetz inviting him to the next meeting
of the Landmark Commission to discuss the details of his plans , as the
application did not spell out in detail what work was to be done on
waht portion of the building, and questions as to the quality of the
proposed work. The motion passed. Nancy Fike will write to Mr.
Steinmetz .

There was a motion by Tom Hopkins , seconded by Marlene Goetschel that
the committee consider only Mr. Steinmetz ' s application this year, and
that the others be notified that the committee did not consider the
proposed work qualified under the criteria and intent of the program.
The motion passed.
No award was made. Mr. Steinmetz application will be reviewed in more
detail at the next regular monthly meeting of the Landmark Commission.
Mayor Busse suggested that the judging criteria be reviewed for next
year to better define the criteria and basis for award.
Nancy Fike will contact the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce to inquire
there would be a possibility of them providing a matching grant program.
David Mohan read a letter he had written to the City suggesting that
a monument be erected at the new City Hall commemorating an outstanding
local person. The Mayor suggested that William McHenry also be
considered. The letter will be read and discussed at the March 7 City
Council meeting.
Jan Ringer has resigned from the Commission due to her husband ' s job
transfer. Carol Smith will be asked to replace her.
The proposed Demolition Ordinance will be discussed. at a meeting of the
City of McHenry Building & Zoning Committee on March 7 at 7 : 00 , prior
to the regular City Council meeting.
Heritage Tour update: so far no houses have been arranged for the
annual tour/fundraiser. Additional potential homeowners will be
contacted in the next month. If 3 willing owners cannot be found, an
alternative must be decided. Suggestions were: payed programs in the
gym of Landmark School, bus tours , finding homes farther from Landmark
School and providing shuttle bus service, and others . This years the
Farmer ' s Market will be strictly a farmer ' s market, with no crafts
booths . There will also be a larger antique car show, and more live
entertainment. Marlene Goetschel and Mary Lou Schaeffer are progress-
ing on their long distance quilt to be raffled. The raffle permit
will be obtained soon to begin selling raffle tickets earlier this year .
The meeting was adjourned at 9 : 30 P.M.
