11 November 1989
The regular monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission
' was called to order at 7 : 35 P.M. at the home of Nancy Fike. Members
present were: Nancy Fike, Tom Hopkins , Hank Nell, Marva Dixon, Lori
Wilhelm, Mary Lou Schaeffer, Adele Froelich, Jesse Freund, Frank Gans ,
Donna Belle Doherty, Marlene Goetschel , and David Mohan. Dick Rabbitt
has submitted his resignation. Guest was Susan Goldberg of the Star.
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved by consensus . There was
no Treasurer ' s report.
Nancy passed around a copy of a letter written by Mayor Busse to the
Illinois Preservation Action Coordinator in support of restoring the
Federal Rehabilitation Tax Credits , as requested by this Commission.
Nancy relayed information she has received concerning ownership of the
Owen house. Perry Moy does not own the property as had earlier been
rumored, the Owner is still unknown. Perry May does own the adjacent
Freund property which he intends to develop for a new restaurant and
banquet facility. He would like to purchase the Owen property and
restore the house.
Because the owner of the Owen house cannot be verified, and the house
is still endangered, Nancy recommended that the Commission consider
plaguing the house to help preserve it. Mary Lou Schaeffer made a
motion that the Commission submit and vote on a plaque application,
seconded by Adele Froelich, unanimous vote in favor by the Commission.
Voting on the application proceded immediately, with an average
score of 80 . The Commission will recommend to the City Council that
a plaque be approved for the house, to be retained at City Hall until
the Owner comes forward.
Tom Hopkins did not have the Demolition Ordinance recommendation ready,
but promised that he would have it absolutely by the next meeting.
Tom Hopkins relayed to the members of the Commission plans by Chuck
Miller for converting the Dobyns House at 1202 N. Riverside Drive into
a restaurant. Nancy Fike is preparing a history of the property for
Chuck Miller. The house was constructed ca. 1925 .
A date of September 16 was set for the 1990 Heritage Tour. Lori and
Marya volunteered to be the planning committee, with initial recommend-
ations at the next meeting. Mary Lou and Marlene will make a quilt
for the raffle.
Nancy will submit a news release to the Star and Northwest Herald
concerning the Facade Improvement Grant program to attract applicants .
The meeting was adjourned at 8 : 35 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
