3 October 1989
The regular monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission
was called to order at 7 : 34 P.M. Member present were: Nancy Fike,
Tom Hopkins , Dick Rabbitt, Hank Nell , Marya Dixon, Lori Wilhelm, Adele
Froelich, Jessie Freund, Marlene Goetschel , and David Mohan; absent
were: Mary Lou Schaeffer, Frank Gans , and Donna Belle Doherty.
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved by consensus . A guest,
Carol Jean Smith was welcomed.
The plaque for Christopher' s Men' s Wear was presented by the City
Council last month. Present at the Council meeting for the presentation
were Chris Wertz , Bill Day, and Jim Althoff .
Reports were given on the Fall Heritage Tour. and Farmers Market. Total
receipts for the fund raiser were $1 , 896 . 40 , expenses of $535 . 70 ,
resulting in a profit of $1 , 360 . 70 . Last year' s profit was $364 . 68 .
Since no funds were distributed last year, total funds available are
$1 , 725 . 38 . The Commission decided to make $1 , 500 . 00 available for
grants this year, retaining $225 . 68 for initial expense money for
next year ' s event.
Suggestions for next year included: lowering the booth cost for
non-profit organizations, offering a discount for returning vendors ,
soliciting participation by more service organizations . Thank you notes
have been sent to all participants . Better publicity and signage are
needed for next year. The Commission decided to hold the event on the
same weekend next year, so that the date can be published in the county
and state event directories . A special thanks was extended to Lori
Wilhelm for all of her work.
The Commission is continuing to seek information on the sale and owner-
ship of the Owen house. Recent information on the Justen House
indicates that it is in good hands . Nancy and Tom spoke with one of
the Attorneys with an office in the building, who indicated that the
house will be repainted in period color scheme, cleaned up and restored
on the interior. They are also considering new landscaping based on
old photos of the original landscaping scheme.
Tom Hopkins presented a Demolition Ordinace proposal for discusssion,
the content of which was generally approved by the Commission. He will
obtain a copy of the existing ordinance and draft a letter to the City
Council concerning the recomendations for next month' s Commission
meeting.
The Commission discussed The Community Revitalization Tax Act of 1989
proposed by the U.S . House of Representatives . Copies of a flier
explaining the act were distributed to Commission members with their
mailing prior to the meeting. The Commission will ask the City
Council to pass a resolution in favor of the act. Nancy will write
a letter to the City Council requesting the resolution.

A slide program is being scheduled for the month of February concerning
historic buildings on Pistakee Bay. More information will be coming.
Mary Lou Schaeffer and her husband will be moving to California due to
her husband' s transfer. Thanks to Mary Lou for her time devoted to the
Commission. A new member will be appointed, hopefully before the
November meeting.
Dick Rabbitt has decided to resign from the Commission. Dick was a
charter member of the Commission. Thanks to Dick for his service and
time.
The meeting was adjourned at 8 : 30 P.M.
