HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 6/7/1988 - Landmark Commission MINUTES OF THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION 7 June 1988 The monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission was called to order at 7 : 32 P.M. Members present were: Nancy Fike, Tom Hopkins , Dick Rabbitt, Dorothy Uttich, Hank Nell , Marya Weber, Lorretta Wilhelm, Mary Lou Schaeffer, and Adele Froelich; absent were: Jesse Freund, Mary Vycital , Frank Gans , and Elizabeth Serritella. The Commission welcomed new member Hank Nell . New officers for the next year were elected by the volunteer method as follows : Temporary Chairperson: Nancy Fike; Vice Chairperson: Mary Lou Schaeffer; Secretary-Treasurer: Dick Rabbitt. Voting proceded on the plaque application from the Whale ' s Tail following a discussion of exterior changes to the original design, including window sizes, addition of awnings, greenhouse addition. Average score received was 66 . 6 . The structure will be recommended to the City Council for plaguing. A motion was made by Tom Hopkins and seconded by Nancy Fike for the Commission to specifiy the wording to be used on all approved plagues , commencing immediately, and approved by vote. The wording for the Whale' s Tail plaque will be as follows : "Site of McHenry Brewery - 1868" . Motion by Mary Lou Schaeffer , second by Marya Weber, approved by vote. The plaque for the Smith Home has been approved by the City Council , �. the plaque is being prepared. The School District has announced that Lnadmark School is to be used as an Administrative Building and Commuinity Center upon completion of the new school construction. The School Board has also indicated that they intend to apply for a plaque from the Landmark Commission. The budget for the new fiscal year in the amount of $1 , 000 was submitted to the City on May 23 . Copies were distributed to members of the Commission for approval . A motion was made by Mary Lou Schaeffer and seconded by Dorothy Uttich to accept the budget, approved by vote. Nancy Fike and Loretta Wilhelm recently attended the annual Illinois Preservation Conference in Bloomington. Both were impressed by the quality of the speakers and tours . The Conference stressed local organization, community education and motivation, and tying tourism and economic development with preservation, as well as interaction with other local Landmark Commissions . Next year ' s conference will be held in Evanston. At the next meeting, the Commission will discuss possible changes to the plaque application and approval procedure, preparation of a handout about historic preservation questions and answers , and a possible awards program for exemplary preservation. A schedule was made for participation in the Fiesta Days Art in the Park again this year. Frank Gans ' wife recently passed away. The Commission voted to donate a book in her name to the Library from personal donations by the members . The Title will be discussed at the next meeting. City of McHenry Landmark Commission, 7 June 1988 page 2 The research on Green Street and Riverside Drive building histories is progressing slowly. Please have your information for the next meeting. Nancy announced an idea for a fund raising plan that had beem devised by her and Loretta on their return trip from the Preservation Conference. The plan would involve a combination of a house walk and progressive dinner to be sponsered by the Landmark Commission and other community organizations that may be interested. The progressive dinner would take place in 3 larger commercial type buildings , with the money collected to create a fund for facade improvement grants for local commercial buildings . The plan will be discussed with other community leaders during the next month to determine feasibility. A tentative date for the event was set as September 24 .
