HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 5/3/1988 - Landmark Commission MINUTES OF THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION 3 May 1988 The monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission was called to order at 7 : 31 P.M. Members present were: Nancy Fike, Tom Hopkins , Don Howard, Jesse Freund, Dick Rabbitt, Dorothy Uttich, Mary Vycital, Marya Weber, Loretta Wilhelm, and Mary Lou Schaeffer. Absent were: Adele Froelich, Frank Gans , and Elizabeth Serritella. This is Don Howard' s last meeting with the Commission, and the members of the Commission expressed their appreciation for his service. Guests Alice Brda, Greg Dierks and Eilene Cooper were welcomed. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. Treasurer ' s report indicated no change. The new fiscal year starts this month. A budget committe of Nancy Fike, Dick Rabbitt and Tom Hopkins was appointed. They will meet for breakfast at 7 : 00 A.M. , Tuesday, May 10 at the Windhill Restaurant to establish the budget. Greg Dierks and Eilene Cooper were present to represent the plaque application from the Whale ' s Tail Restaurant (McHenry Brewery) . They had submitted more historical data to Nancy before the meeting and discussed the work that they had done to the building since purchasing it in May of 1981 . The building has been almost totally remodeled, including sandblasting the brick, cleaning, new windows , new roof , and the addition of a greenhouse on the north side. Remodeling work exceded $250 ,000 . A tour of the structure by the Commission was scheduled for Monday, May 23 , at 8 : 45 A.M. , with voting by the Commission to take place at the June meeting. Voting for the plaque application submitted by Dennis and Jessica Smith for their home at 3712 W. Main proceded following a discussion of the changes to the structure, including windows , front porch, siding, and the addition of awnings . The requirements for plaguing were reviewed and Nancy asked that careful consideration be given during the voting due to the changes to the structure. Average score was 68 . 2 , the structure will be recommended to the City Council for plaguing. The Green Street business histories were collected by Nancy. Some are still incomplete. Alice Brda was at the meeting to offer additional information on the history of Green Street and passed around some old photos of the area. Nancy sent the letter to the McHenry Public Library Board as discussed at last month' s meeting. No reply has been received to date. Information was presented that when the new grade school is completed, the Principal from Landmark School will be transferred to that facility, indicating that the School Board no longer will use Landmark School as a teaching facility. Nancy will contact the School Board for more information. The City of McHenry is still negotiating on property for the proposed new City Hall . Riverside Drive business history assignments were allotted to the members . Tom Hopkins will check with the Chamber concerning a tent and display by the Landmark Commission at Art in the Park during Fiesta Days again this year. • City of McHenry Landmark Commission, 3 May 1988 page 2 The current procedure concerning application for and awarding of plaques for historic structures was discussed. Suggestions concerning changes included: requiring submission of a recent photograph, and an older photo if available, reducing the value of "Maintainance and Grounds" , automatic deductions for alterations to original design, the Commission recommending or requiring the wording to be used on the actual plaque. Further discussion and possible revisions to the procedure will occur at a future meeting. The State Preservation Conference will be held in Bloomington, Il this year on June 2-4 . Nancy Fike and Dorothy Uttich will attend to represent the Landmark Commission. Other mambers who may wish to attend should contact Nancy. The meeting was adjourned at 9 : 00 P.M.
