expenditures are $1 , 300 . 02 .
A plaque application was received from Mary Lou & Carl Schaeffer for
the former Bolander House at 3619 Waukegan Rd. Historical data was
incomplete. Mary Lou will do more research to attempt to obtain more

re-considered at next month' s meeting. The Commission will inspect
the house on Saturday, September 5 , at 9 : 00 A.M.
The artwork for the Business District Signs has been installed.
Nancy Fike, Tom Hopkins and Jay Weber met with a Northwest Herald
reporter on Monday, August 24 for photos . A story was published the
following day, without a photo. Nancy will inquire as to what happened
to the photo.
Update on Landmark School : District 15 officials plan to utilize the
facility for students until 1989-90 at this time. There are no plans
to demolish the structure at this time. The Commission will continue
to monitor the situation.
Update on City Hall expansion/relocation: no decision has been made
according to Barb Gilpin. Commision members were encouraged to talk
to their aldermen to express the concerns of the Commission. Nancy
suggested that Mayor Busse and/or an alderman be invited to a future
meeting to discuss the situation. Nancy will attempt to arrange a
discussion at the October meeting of the Commission.
The map of historic structures from the surveys which has been
worked on by Adele was displayed. The most common house styles in
McHenry are 1 ) Homestead, 2 ) Bungalow, 3 ) Upright & Wing. The map is
color coded according to architectural style. Some structures are
still not shown and may not have been included in the survey. Nancy
& Adele will update and improve the map during the winter. The map
clearly shows concentrations of older structures .
Mary Vycital had contacted local schools to determine if local history
is being taught and found that it is not, although there seems to be
a return to the teaching of local history in other schools . She will
contact school principals and teachers to see if a program can be
developed and to offer the assistance and input of the Landmark
Commission.
Dorothy Uttich was not able to make any progress on her research for
production of post cards .
City of McHenry Landmark Commission, 1 September 87 (continued)
Gary Nickels of Woodstock is scheduled to present a program for the
Commission and the public at the November meeting. He is a collector
of post cards and has a very large collection of local cards which
have been made into a slide show. Adele will provide publicity to
attempt to provide an audience. The November meeting will start
early, at 7 : 00 P.M. so that the presentation can follow at 7 : 30 .
Nancy had planned to attend a workshop on the National Register in
Oak Park on October 3 but has received information concerning another
workshop that might be more useful to attend. That workshop will
also take place in Oak Park, on October 24 and concerns the formation
and responsibilities of local landmark commissions. Nancy asked if
any other members would like to attend. A few members tentatively
said they would. The fee is $ 10 . 00 .
Nancy will be giving a presentation in Marengo on September 14 about
forming a landmark commission. She has also been contacted by some
people from Algonquin for the same purpose.
The goals of the Landmark Commission for the next year were finally
discussed. A list of the propsed goals had been distributed in July.
Progress has already been made on a number of the items . Additional
information may be obtained at the October 24 workshop, especially
concerning a preservation ordinance and developing public awareness
programs . Main Street USA, which is part of the National Trust, also
has programs concerning the delvelopment and rahabilitation of older
downtown areas, including 3 video tape presentations , which are
approximately $85 each. The Commission may check with local service
organizations and the Chamber for possible participation in the
purchase of these. There will be more discussion on this later .
A list of books needs to be prepared for possible donation to the .
library, and distribute to prospective donators . Tom Hopkins will
research possible involvement with the Economic Development Commission.
The preparation of a slide/tape program may be good for a junior
high school program either for presentation as a part of the local
history program, possibly produced with the students .
The meeting was adjourned at 8 : 35 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
