The Planning Commission is an advisory body to the Zoning Board and City Council , and is made up of 11 citizen members . The Commission is required by law, as in most states , beginning in Massachusetts in 1913 . The role of the Planning commission has evolved over the years to advise the City on matters such as environmental impact, growth control , and to check deline and decay, as well as other tasks. It is concerned mainly with land use planning and transportation planning for the future. Tools used as guidelines are: the Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and Zoning Map. This work is sometimes assisted by the. City Engineer , Director of Public Works , and Economic Development Commission. The comprehensive Plan is due for updating in the near future, and it was suggested that the Landmark Commission make a statement concerning this updating, and the relationship to preservation. A short discussion followed concerning movement of city services from central areas to the north and south developing commercial corridors , and location of the proposed new school. Dorothy Uttich passed around photos taken of the quilt which is on display at the library. The intention is to use the photos to produce post cards to sell for income to the Commission. Dorothy will pursue additional information. The plaque for the McHenry Power & Light building was presented to Lee Cooney at a recent City Council meeting. Marya Weber represented the Landmark Commission at that City Council presentation. The plaque is on display in the main floor corridor of the building at 1402 Riverside. The Landmark Commission tent at Fiesta Days Art in the Park was very successful. Many interested people stopped to look at the old photos , talk and ask questions . The Commission decided to repeat next year with larger quarters and more display space. City of McHenry Landmark Commission, 4 August 87 (continued) Adele Froelich has completed the map of historic structures for the survey data that she has . Tom Hopkins will attempt to determine the style of a few more surveyed buildings , if identifiable for inclusion on the map. Adele used 17 colors to distinguish styles. She will bring the map to the next meeting. The inserts for the Business District Signs by Huges Signs, artwork by Jay Weber, were completed and shown by Marya Weber. The consensus was that they were very nice. They will be installed soon. Nancy Fike will arrange for a newspaper photographer and publicity. Nancy Fike distributed copies of a draft of a letter to Mayor. Busse and the City Council concerning possible relocation out of the central business area, expressing the Commission' s feelings about trying to retain City services in the downtown areas . The draft was approved unanimously and will be sent to Mayor Busse. Discussion of the Landmark Commissions goals again had to be postponed until a future meeting, due to the time. Nancy Fike is hoping to attend a seminar on applying for listing in the National Register of Historic Places in Oak Park, on Saturday, Oct. 3 , and invited others to attend if possible. Keith Adams expressed his gratitude for being involved with the Commission. The Commission thanks Keith for his time and effort given. The meeting was adjourned at 9 : 05 P.M.
