Joan Schwegel , Chairman of the City Planning Commission attended the
meeting to discuss the role of the Planning Commission and it ' s
possible relationship with the Landmark Commission. The Planning
Commission is an advisory body to the Zoning Board and City Council ,
and is made up of 11 citizen members . The Commission is required by
law, as in most states , beginning in Massachusetts in 1913 . The role
of the Planning commission has evolved over the years to advise the City
on matters such as environmental impact, growth control , and to check
deline and decay, as well as other tasks. It is concerned mainly with
land use planning and transportation planning for the future. Tools
used as guidelines are: the Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and
Zoning Map. This work is sometimes assisted by the. City Engineer ,
Director of Public Works , and Economic Development Commission. The
comprehensive Plan is due for updating in the near future, and it was
suggested that the Landmark Commission make a statement concerning this
updating, and the relationship to preservation. A short discussion
followed concerning movement of city services from central areas to the
north and south developing commercial corridors , and location of the
proposed new school.
Dorothy Uttich passed around photos taken of the quilt which is on
display at the library. The intention is to use the photos to produce
post cards to sell for income to the Commission. Dorothy will pursue
additional information.
The plaque for the McHenry Power & Light building was presented to Lee
Cooney at a recent City Council meeting. Marya Weber represented the
Landmark Commission at that City Council presentation. The plaque is
on display in the main floor corridor of the building at 1402 Riverside.
The Landmark Commission tent at Fiesta Days Art in the Park was very
successful. Many interested people stopped to look at the old photos ,
talk and ask questions . The Commission decided to repeat next year with
larger quarters and more display space.

until a future meeting, due to the time.
