HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 7/7/1987 - Landmark Commission MINUTES OF THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION 7 July 1987 The monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission was called to order at 7 : 30 P.M. Commission members present were: Nancy Fike, Adele Froelich, Tom Hopkins , Dick Rabbitt, Mary Vycital , Marya Weber, Keith Adams , Frank Gans, Dorothy Uttich, & new member Mary lou Schaeffer. One opening remains to be filled on the Commission. Financial Report: $378 . 94 spent during month of May, 1987 , for construction & materials for the Business District Historical signs . Joan Schwegel , Chairman of the McHenry Planning Commission, was scheduled to give a presentation and discussion, but was unable to attend. She will attend the August meeting. The Plaque for McHenry Power & Light was approved by the City Council and should be ready by the end of the week. Lee Cooney has tentatively granted permission for the Commission to display the plaque at the Fiesta Days "Heritage Tent" during Art in the Park. Fiesta Days Art in the Park will be on Saturday, July 25 from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. The Landmark Commission will sponsor and man the "Heritage Tent" . Items on display will include: photos from past Fiesta Days , a fact sheet on the Landmark Commission, photos of plagued structures , the McHenry Power & Light completed plaque and other memorabilia. We will also sell City of McHenry History books , and make available house walk brochures and plaque applications . Nancy Fike will provide the tent, Mary lou Schaeffer the tables & chairs , Tom Hopkins the photos of plagued structures and identification sign, and Adele Froelich the publicity. Schedule: Set-up, Dick, Marylou, Dorothy, Tom, Keith, Frank, Nancy; 10-12 A.M. , Adele, Dick; 12-2 P.M. , Nancy, Frank; 2-4 P.M. Don, Mary; Clean-up, Don, Mary lou, Dick, Nancy. Nancy Fike approved completion of the Business District Signs artwork designed by Jay Weber so that they could be finished and installed before Fiesta Days . The artwork will be typeset by R & W Graphics and sikscreened on aluminum by Huges Signs at a cost of approximately $170 each. Jay Weber ' s total invoice was $350 , $150 having been paid, $200 balance due. Dick Rabbitt and Tom Hopkins reported on their attendance at the State Preservation Conference in Quincy on June 4-6 , representing the City of McHenry Landmark Commission. Dick, who had lived near Quincy more than a few years ago, presented a brief history and background. Both Dick and Tom reviewed what was learned at the conference and felt that it was a worthwhile experience, encouraging other members to attend future conferences . Reports were sent to Mayor Busse. Adele Froelich is making progress on the map of historic structures . It has become a time consuming process . The small scale of the map has made identification of the structures difficult. The Commission discussed the list of goals for the upcoming years prepared by Nancy Fike. It was agreed that the goals would be pursued during the next year, but that some items would probably be ongoing for a number of years . • City of McHenry Landmark Commission, 7 July 87 (continued) The Commission discussed the possibility of City services , and ,s„ local government plans to move facilities out of the current central business district locations , and felt that this could be detrimental to the areas involved. Nancy Fike will draft a letter of inquiry to the City concerning plans and goals affecting preservation and economic development plans for the older business areas of the City.
