5 May 1987
The monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission was
called to order at 7 : 32 P.M. Commission members present were:
Nancy Fike, Adele Froelich, Tom Hopkins , Dick Rabbitt, Mary Vycital ,
Marya Weber, & Frank Gans . Absent were: Don Howard, Dorothy Uttich,
Karla Meyer, Earl Walsh, & Keith Adams .
Guests attending the meeting were: Lee Cooney, & Jay Weber .
The minutes of the previous meeting were unanimously approved.
Landmark Commission plaques for the Riverside Hotel & Barbian House
are to be presented at the City Council meeting on Wednesday, May 6 ,
at 8 : 00 P.M. Mary Vycital will represent the Landmark Commission
for the presentations . Frank Gans will receive the plaque for the
Barbian House.
A plaque application has been received from Lee Cooney for the McHenry
Power & Light building (now known as the McHenry Trading Co. ) at
1402 Riverside Dr. Mr. Cooney was at the meeting to present a brief
history of the building, including past owners , uses and respective
dates , and to answer questions . The Commission will meet at the
building for a tour on Monday, May 11 at 7 : 00 P.M. The application
will be voted on at next months meeting.
Update on business district signs : Nancy & a Park District representative
met today to determine exact locations for the signs to be erected
this week. Jay Weber attended the meeting to give a presentation on
the displays to be placed in the signs . He presented 4 schemes for
the display. Scheme #3 was selected by the Commission. The scheme
includes a rendering of each respective area taken from old photos .
Mr. Weber will procede with final designs at the rate of $10 per hour
for his services . The Commission approved the rate and a $150 advance.
A discussion of the previous night' s presentation at the Woodstock
Opera House on the National Register of Historic Places took place,
which all who had attended agreed was well attended and worthwhile.
Nancy has written a letter to be sent to the School Board inquiring
as to the status of Landmark School . Commission members read copies
of the letter . Nancy will follow-up if a reply is not received prior
to the next meeting.
Financial Report: 5-1 -86 through 4-30-87 the Commission spent a total
of $1 , 217 . 12 . This amount included construction and placement of the
Business District Signs . Althought a $2 , 000 budget had been requested,
a $1 , 000 budget had been approved by the City Council . The Budget
Committee (Nancy Fike, Don Howard, & Dick Rabbitt) will meet Tuesday
May 12 , 7 : 30 A.M. for a meeting to discuss next year' s budget.
It was decided that election of officers will take place at next month' s
meeting, at which time there may be new members .
Earl Walsh is continuing to work on the Survey Map, although the work
is progressing slowly. The method of marking the map was discussed,
at decided that fine point pens of various colors may work best.

Fiesta Days and the Landmark Commission participation was again
-.- discussed. It was suggested that the Commission have a tent during
the Art in the Park portion of the celebration for the purpose of
displaying historic photographs and other historic items , possibly
a story teller, and a general gathering place. Tom Hopkins will
talk to Fran Olsen about this prior to the next meeting.
Setting of priorities for the upcoming year was postponed until the
next meeting, due to the lateness of the meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at 8 : 50 P.M.
