, MINUTES OF THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARR COMMISSION
� 3 March 1987
The monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmar_k Commission was
called to order at 7 : 05 P.M. The meeting was started early to allow
time at the end for a di�cussion with property owners on Main Street
that had been invited to the meeting.
Commission members present were : Nancy Fike, Adele Froelich, Frank
Gans , Tom Hopkins , Don Howard, Karla Meyer, Earl Walsh & Keith Adams .
Dorothy Uttich & Mary Vycital arrived late. Marya Weber was absent.
Guests were : Barb Me_yer, and various property owners from Main Street,
arr_iving at various times during the first half hour. Mayor Busse and
Aldermen Bolger & Nolan were present for_ the latter part of the meeting.
The minutes of the previous meeting were unanimously approved.
First order of business was to vote on two plaque application� that had
been received the previous month for the Riverside Hotel and the
Barbian House, both locate� on Riverside Drive. Both applications
were voted approval and will be referred to the City Council for final
approval . The Riverside Hotel received an average score of_ 86 and will
receive plaque no. 5, the Barbian House received and average score
of 74 and will be awarded plaque no. 6 , upon approval by the Cit_y
Council_ . No other ne�a applications were received.
Adele Froelich has prepared a dr�ft of the text for the Riverside Dr.
� Business Historic Marker. The markers are scheduled for dedication on
May 16 in conjunction with a wa.lking �our to be conducted bv Don and
Judy Porter. Adele will provide publicity for the event.
Tom Hopkins passed around a drawing for the proposed markers , which
are being constructed by the McHenry Park District. Tom will contact
Pete Merkel of the Park District to coordinate erection of the markers
with the respective property owners , the City, the Beautificat�_on
Committee and the Landmark Commission.
"Houses by Mail" ha� been received and will be donated to the McHen.ry
Library, with delivery by Dorothy Uttich. 1
The next monthly meeting (April 7 ) will be at the library, due to the
council chambers being needed for Election Day. The meeting will start
at 7 : 00 P.M.
Nancy Fike is planning to attend a conference in Chicago an historic
�reservation. Her attendance is being sponsored by the McHenry County
Planning Commission.
At a.pproximately 7 : 40 P.M, the discussion w�_th the Main Street property
owners in attendance commenced. Nancy Fike had distributed a sign-in
sheet and recorded the procedings on audio tape.
Nancy began by introducing the members af the Commission and reading
the original Ordinance that created the Landmark Commission, and
presented a brief review of the Commission' s accomplishments .
� Earl Walsh followed this with a presentation of a brief history of the
Main Street area and the surrounding community, known once as West
McHenry.

�, An open discussion with the Main Street property owners followed the
presentation by Earl Walsh. Topics Discussed were: publ�_c awareness
and grass roots efforts concerning the potential for formation of an
historic district; the need for and strictness o.f an ordinace for
pro-tection of historic structures and districts ; whether the existing
ordinance should be amr.lended or a new ordinance written for this
purpose and how to influence the City on this matter; the need for the
possibl_e ordinance to reflect local concerns and desires ; variations
allowed by the City on the cur_rent ordinace in respect to their affect
on historic areas , structures , and the special considerations of_
rehabbing and adaptive reuse.
Mayor Busse and Aldermen Bolger & Nolan entered into the discussion
upon their arrival followinq another meeting they had been attending
at City Hall .
The meeting was adjourned at 8 : 50 P.M.
