HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 10/7/1986 - Landmark Commission MINUTES OF THE CITY OF MCHENRY LANDMARR COMMISSION � 7 October 1986 The monthl_y meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission was called to order at 7 : 30 P.M. Present were Nancy Fike (Chairman) , Adele Froelich, Frank Gans , Karla Meyer, Tom Hopkins , �ary Vycital, Marya Weber, Keith Adams . Don Howard, Dick Rabbitt, Dorothv Uttich, & Earl Walsh were absent. Guest was Liz Nolan of the McHenry Beautification Committee. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. Liz Nolan addressed the Commission concerning the history and eff_orts of the Beautification Committee. Liz Nolan & Fran Olsen organized the group about 5 years ago as co-chairpersons , with the primar_y pur_pose of planting flowers in McHenry. The Committee relies primarily on donations and volunteers for its work, as well as the annual pumpkin sale. The Beautification Committee will be planting flowers in conjunction with placement of the Historic Markers . The Historic Markers to be placed in the three major business areas of_ McHenry, the format will be as follows : approximately 24" x 28" , with historic text of the district, pictures and a map, all of which may be changed from time to time. The will also contain names af contributors of the information and Landmark Commission identification. Tom Hopkins will prepare a sketch for approval by the Commission. Methods of funding for the markers is still not determined. Tentative locations for the markers are as follows : Green Str_eet at the McHenry Savings � Bank, Main Street at Christopher ' s Men ' s Wear, Riverside Drive at the Hotel . The City of McHenry has been planning to move a section of the old Pearl Street Bri�ge to a crossing over Boone Creek behin� City Hall . The cost of the project is still being determined. The Landmark Commission will affer its help, if needed. The first 2 plaque applications (North Wes}�rn Hotel , Count ' s Hause) were approved by the City Council . The applicants were notified and the plaques completed. The plaques are to be presented at the Oct. 15 city Council meeting. The voting procedure for plaque applications was discussed. The Commission agreed that the total average score would be public, but the individual voting sheets would remain confidential . Also, it is the responsibility of the Corunission to notify applicants of approval by thP Ci�y Council . Frarik Gans will qive his presentation of the Riverside Drive history at the November meetinq. - The public hearing for the proposed new Zoning Ordinance had tak�n place on Thursday, Oct. 2 . Nancy Fike, Marya Weber, Mary Vycital , & Tom Hopkins attended the hearing. Per the request of the Landmark Commissi_on a statement was added to the General Provisions of the proposed ordinance: "To insure and facili_tate the preservation of sites , areas , and str_uctures of historical, architectural and aesthetic importance. " � This statement went beyond that requested by the Commission. This will probably occur after completion of the surve�s . No nzw plaque applicat�ons have been received. (Not� : an application for the Weber hou5e at 3801 W. Main �t, was received after the meeting and a site insnection by the Commission was scheduled for 8 : 00 A.M. Saturday, October 25 . ) Nancy ask�d Commis�ion members to come up with some new ideas for future public programs . Jim Heisler f�oM Crystal Lake contacted the McHenry Commission for assistance in starting a landmark commission in Crystal Lake. An invitation was received for the annual LPCI Preservation Ball on November 1 in Chicago. At $130 per person, black tie, none of the Comraission members expressed an interest in attending.
