HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 2/4/1986 - Landmark Commission MINUTES OF THE CITY OF McHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION 4 February 1986 The monthly meeting of the City of McHenry Landmark Commission came to order at 7:37 p.m. Roll call gave those present as Nancy Fike, Chairman; Phyllis Bauer, Marya Weber, Adele Froehlich, Frank Gans, Don Howard, Dave Gelwicks and Joe Etten. Absent were Earl Walsh, Dorothy Uttich, Mary Vycital and Dick Rabbitt. Guests were Tom Hopkins, architectural adviser to the commission; Barbara Gilpin, City Clerk and Mike Rosemond an architectural photographer, who is interested in the goals of the commission. A change in the date for the dedication of the site of the first county courthouse became apparent after the last meeting due to the pro j ection of the completion date for the gazebo not being until later in May. The new date for the dedication will be Sunday, June 8th at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Adele Froehlich reported that Fr. Fish has agreed to say a prayer and give a bless- ing on this occasion. She also talked to Bill Toalson, the director of the city band, but there was no commitment on his part, as it was indefinite as to what was needed in the way of a musical program and the band had not started practic- ing as yet. The band expects payment for all performances. There was some dis- cussion as to whether or not this performance would be counted as a concert spon- sored by the city. It was decided that patriotic and nostalgic type music should be `- performed by the band for this occasion. After much discussion as to the logistics and technical concerns of the program for the dedication of the courthouse site, it was the agreed by members of the commission, that since the new gazebo is being built with a sound system, it would be preferable that the program be presented from the gazebo. Concern for having some sort of sound system, shelter and stage at the actual site area would not have to be a consideration with this plan. The dedication of the courthouse site and the gazebo would be a joint occasion. Nancy Fike reported that she has asked the Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors, Ed Buss and Bill Busse, mayor of the city of McHenry, to say a few words as part of the program. She will also be sending personal invitations to some of the political figures in the area, and to those persons who were instrumen- tal in establishing the location of the site, Bob Conway, John Smith and Everett Thomas. It was announced that due to her being out of the area for the next few months, Mary Vycital would not be able to continue as program chairman for the dedication ceremony of the site of the first county courthouse. Dave Gelwicks, Don Howard and Frank Gans agreed to work with the Sescuicentennial Program Committee for planning the portion of the program concerning the site of the first courthouse. Tom Hopkins presented a proposed wording for the plaque to be used to mark the site of the first county courthouse. It was approved by the commission. He will present a proposed design for the plaque at the next commission meeting. `-' MINUTES OF THE CITY OF McHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION (Cont.) Ch. Fike announced that she sent letters to Bob Conway, John Smith and Everett Thomas thanking them for their help in locating the site of the courthouse. She also has sent letters to all the persons who have been involved with the survey of structures in the city, thanking them for their past help, but also asking them to continue with the survey and complete the routes sometime this spring. It was noted there are also a few routes that have not been assigned and that more help is needed with the survey. The Certified Local Government program was mentioned by the Chairman as an area that the Landmark Commission may wish to explore as to whether or not a preservation ordinance should be proposed to the city council. There are a great many important factors to be considered for such an issue. The idea of having area landmark signs for such areas as the Riverside Dr., Green St. and Main St. business districts was discussed. These signs would perhaps have a drawing of that particular area with the historic sites designated. It was suggested that perhaps a photo of how the area looked years ago might also be included in this sign. The best location for such a sign would have to be determined and then permission from the property owner would have to be gained. Fran Olsen of the Chamber of Commerce agreed to mention this to the business owners and felt there would not be a problem with anyone. There would be a need for someone to design such a sign and someone to do a little research for a paragraph or so of the history of that area, as well. The meeting was ad journed at 8:30 with a motion by Joe Etten and seconded by Marya Weber. Respectfully submitted,
