HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - 11/5/1985 - Landmark Commission . , .. . CITY OF McHENRY LANDMARK COMMISSION MINUTES OF THE MEETING `- November 5, 1985 APPROVAL OF MINUTES The meeting was called to order by Chairman Nancy Fike at 7:32 p.m. The following members were present: Nancy Fike, Marya Weber, Mary and Charles Vycital , Adele Froelich, Dave Gelwicks, Don Howard, Frank Gans, Dick Rabbitt and Dorothy Uttich, acting as recording secretary. Members absent were Phyllis Bauer, Joe Etten and Earl Walsh. Visitors were Mayor William Busse, Sharon Prather and Tom Hopkins. Dick Rabbitt made a motion that the minutes of the October meeting be approved as presented. The motion was seconded by Uave Gelwicks, and was approved unanimously. OLD BUSINESS Nancy Fike reported on the Coffin Architectural Program. The program was excellent. Mr. Coffin traced the sources of architectural history with his slide presentation. The turnout for the program was very disappointing. Only eight people attended - including Nancy Fike, Dorothy Uttich and Tom Hopkins. The news coverage was in the Plaindealer, but the feeling is that the Plaindealer is not read by many people. It would seem that we have to explore other areas for publicity. Mayor Busse suggested that we consider having a column in the City newsletter. He said that the next issue would be published in January. The material would have to be turned in by the middle of December. Dave Gelwicks mentioned the Chamber-Gram as another source of reaching the public. We should contact Fran Olsen for further information. The feeling of those present seemed to be that we should follow up on these means of getting better publicity. Nancy reported on the progress of the survey reports. A number of the survey sheets have been turned in but there still are routes to be assigned. Adele Froelich is working on getting a picture of some of the workers doing their routes. It will be featured in the Plaindealer. Nancy said we have November and December to finish the survey. She mentioned that we might check with the Assessor's office to find out how old a house might be. The Recorder's office might also be of help. It was reported that there was no new information on the Court House location. Dave Gelwicks volunteered to try to check for further information. Mayor Busse offered to get him some help on this project. There was discussion on what date we should plaque the site of the first Court House. It was generally agreed to strive for a date in May. Mayor Busse thought it would be a nice "kick-off" for the Sesquicentennial Celebration. Mary Vycital asked about locating the abstract of the Town House - formerly . the Bixler House. Larsens will be contacted to see if they have information on this. NEW BUSINESS . Plaque source: Dick Rabbitt reported he found that McHenry Specialties (D'Nngelo) will make any kind of plaque we want. The price would be twenty- eight dollars for a 20" x 12" plaque painted with outdoor enamel on wood. We , •.,.► Landmark Commission November 5, 1985 Page 2 would choose the colors. The plaque would have the name of the building, the date of construction, possibly a logo, name of original owner and the number of the plaque. Dorothy Uttich reported she had contacted Mike Cajthaml for a price on plaques, but he hasn 't gotten back to her. Dick Rabbitt said he would try to bring a sample plaque to the next meeting. Nancy brought up the subject of further public programs that we might want to consider. She mentioned a slide presentation that would be available from the Historical Society. The four programs would cover: #1 House Restoration; #2 Reading a Building; #3 Historic House Paint Analysis and; #4 Historic Wallpaper. Another program might feature Mike Ward from the Preservation Service, Illinois Dept. of Historic Preservations. Adele suggested that we get the programs and their dates listed in the Chamber-Grams. Nancy Fike and Tom Hopkins reported on the letters they had sent to Paul Simon, Nlan Dixon and Phil Crane urging them to continue to support the Historic tax credit program. They both said that the only positive response came from Paul Simon. Dick Rabbitt said that they had extended the Sesquicentennial Logo contest date to November 15th. Letters were sent to all the schools. ' Mayor Busse said that the City had leased the train depot for one dollar a year and that the Council was interested in suggestions and ideas on what to do with it. He urged people to think about it and call with their ideas. Frank Gans said that currently the old depot in Brodhead, Wisconsin is used for a meeting place for the town, and they have it decorated with old pictures of the town. Nancy extended an invitation from Glenna House from Valley View School for members of the Landmark Commission to attend a History Day program to be held on November 21st from 1 :30 to 3: 15 p.m. at Valley View School . Uorothy Uttich made a motion to adjourn and it was seconded by Don Howard. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 P.M. Respectfully submitted, CGv Uorothy Uttich •
